Thai Poosam Abu Dhabi 2020
Work is worship. True, for every expatriate. Family is devotion, more important for every human being. Balancing life between work and family and your passion is sometimes a challenge. You love to do so many things in life, but unable to do.
Never mind. I believe in keeping an attitude in my life like one gets in a cricket match for a player to get a run out or a stumping chance or a football or hockey player to score a goal in a flash.
It was one such occasion that I happened to attend. I was not planning to attend. But, ended up and then couldn’t resist leaving.
And if I attend, even if I do not have my professional equipment, use whatever I have!.
That’s what I did this weekend. Captured an entire Bhajan session by Bhajan Bharathi for Thai Poosam 2020 held at Abu Dhabi, using my mobile camera.
Enjoying watching the videos, taken through mobile, not one but two. One live on FB and other for Youtube!.
Our Story of Date Palm Trees – 2020
It’s beginning of a new year and new month and a new season too. The date palm trees have flowered. Yes, It marks the arrival of a new season. Weather is cold now, but very soon it will change and the summer will begin. You can expect hot and sunny days soon. Then in no time, the holy month of Ramadan starts. By the time Eid Al Fitr comes, these flowers on date palms would have developed and fully ripened dates will be ready.
I have been following them for the past several years. Each time they flower, it is an opportunity to remember about the past seasons. And also look forward to the future ahead.
If you have kids, take them around for a walk in the evening. Show them the changes to the trees and flowers as the flowers blossom to a fresh green date and then ripen to reddish and juicy ones.
Very few know about this hidden treasure from this part of the world. The actual date tree population in UAE is about 40 millions of which 8.5 in Al-Ain region. The gene pool is large and composes about 120 date varieties. New introductions from Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Oman included Khallas, AbouMaan, Hallawi, Khissab, Khenezi, Nabut Saif, Jabiri, Hillali, Lulu, Chichi, Khadraoui, Sakii, Sultana and Barhi varieties.
UAE produces 533,701 Metric tons of dates on an average every year.
Mark out one or two date palm trees near your home and click them as you watch these wonderful natural phenomenon happening near you. Involve your kids.
Please do share your clicks with hashtags #OurStoryofDatePalms2020 #Talentshare

TALENT SHARE turns 10!

http://talentshare.blogspot.com/ and http://team1talentshare.blogspot.com/ is an initiative I started on 6th October 2008.
What a surprise! Incidentally, it’s the 10th anniversary day of it today.
Talent Share is a creative concept with the motto “A Talent or Knowledge Within You Is To Be Shared”. It is because I strongly believe, if you do not share your talent or knowledge, it will die with you, whereas if you pass it on, you will remain immortal.
It was created to promote non-performing talent among children, especially, those with painting, sketching, poetry writing, story writing etc. I felt that those children with musical abilities or dancing skills always stole the limelight at school and public programmes whereas those who excelled in other areas remained sidelined.
I encouraged parents to request their children to draw, write and then present to me their creative skills as jpeg files and/or record their children performing on musical instruments and send to me the clippings and then posted them on this blog giving them individual page link.
It took time to convince them, but then, it was accepted wholeheartedly and at some point of time, membership of TalentShare Facebook page went above 600 participating children.
It was an answer to those parents who found it difficult to manage time for children, taking them to dedicated training institutes or gurus for developing their skills. A group of us guided them, encouraged both the parents and children to devote a few minutes per week for developing their innate talent. The result was amazing!.
We held competitions monthly and gave prizes to all the participating kids, without selecting them as first, second, third prize winners. Students from schools in all over UAE and even from India, Singapore, Qatar, Bahrain, and Australia participated in the activities.
As days evolved, several other options and opportunities came to children, many of them copying this concept without imbibing its actual intentions. I still continue to promote any such talent whenever I identify them, through a dedicated FB group for Talent Share.
At the time Talent Share celebrates its 10th anniversary, I wish to remember and thank all the children who participated in the initial days and made it a success. I also thank Ms. Seema Shetty, of NMC group, who was confident enough to support me with gifts for many monthly competitions.
I also thank Vijayettan, Godfrey Antony, Shaji Vallikkattiri, RJ Charu of 89.7 Hum FM and many parents from Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah for encouraging me to come out each time with new creative activities, some of them still remain unmatched. Sincere thanks to also my family for supporting all my creative pursuits.
If you identify a person who has a talent or knowledge skills that you believe should get promoted, please do not think for even a fraction of a second. Now you know where to present his skills. #TalentShare.

Once again, sincere thanks for your continued support.

VOICE OF TISS – Vol-2 Dt 19 September 2018
Presenting to you VOICE OF TISS – Vol-2 Dt 19 September 2018.
Inviting you all to listen to it in full, as it is an attempt by a group of children with special abilities.
I am extremely happy to say that, if I had offered the same opportunity to children with abilities, they would have ignored me and maybe even ridiculed me. These children are from a close-knit family named “Team India Special Smiles” under the umbrella of Indian Association Sharjah.
The children are encouraged to read out one or two headings from the newspapers and their siblings join in to complete the news with an additional two or three lines, while their parent record it. They then send the recording to me by WhatsApp and making my job simple, as simple as you can see, to listen to them, enjoy them and compile this news clippings into a one good audible audio/video format. Excuse them, or excuse all the team involved for any shortcomings.
As I believe strongly on my concept, Talent Share – A Talent or Knowledge Within You is to be Shared, they too have stepped in and proved, “Yes, We Can and Of Course, We Will”.
In case you wish to assist TISS in any way, you may contact them on teamindia1729@gmail.com.

Kindness of a different genre by ADIS students

I always love to encourage children and use my blogging activity named Talent Share with the motto “A Talent or Knowledge Within You Is To Be Shared” for it. It is rare that I ignore such an opportunity when I get to know or notice.
During the final days of Ramadan a group of final grade boys from Abu Dhabi Indian School (ADIS) Muroor approached me and told me about their Principal Mr. Neeraj Bhargava’s captivating words: “An effort made for the happiness of others lifts us above ourselves.” A simple statement, but it echoed in their mind repeatedly and lead to a brainstorming session to what became the first of its kind by the school during the holy month.
Everything fell into place quickly for the student-teacher led initiative of collecting contributions to buy a thermal flask, fruits and dates for 500 laborers residing in a camp at Mussaffah.
Approximately 5000 students from Grade 3 to 12 participated wholeheartedly in this initiative. Each one of them enacted with a strong sense of respect, value and care to share.
On the evening of 11th June, the children set off with the items in their school buses accompanied by the staff to meet just before Iftar, the unsung heroes. It was a great feeling for the students who participated in this “Spirit of Giving”, charity event organized by ADIS.
“It started off as an idea to give back something small to those who give us silently so much. A week later we were filling the stomachs and setting smiles in many people”, said Ahmed Hashim, Grade 12 and Head Boy of Abu Dhabi Indian School.
Accepting the gifts and seeing the joy which radiated from the laborers made the students realize the infinite value of those simple but by now immensely precious items of love shared.
Participating in such an event for the first time, Aditya Mani, Grade 11 said, “It was a mixed feeling. On one hand, we could experience how they lived their daily life and on the other hand we could see the joy on their eyes. At the end of the day it’s not about what you have or what you’ve accomplished. It’s all about who’s spirit you’ve lifted up, who you’ve made feel better. It’s about what you’ve given back.”
Continuing with his ever smiling expression, which was double this time he said, one of the recipient, who received our token of affection said to us “more than the food items, the gesture of giving us a flask brought memories of our families back home. We will take it back home as it will be more useful to our elderly parents”.
His classmate Umang Bhandari, Grade 11 said “We all learnt about how lucky we are. Seeing their happiness, gave us a joyous feeling that we felt couldn’t be fetched from any other materialistic actions. The happiness I saw in their eyes made me experience something inexpressible. It inspires me now to do something even better for them. After all, a human is a human who lives for other humans”.
Elachezhiyan Kavyan, Grade 8 concurred, “This was an amazing opportunity as I wanted to serve people and experienced it first time. Something new. How people live, not like us! Happy to see them. If there is any such activities in future, I will definitely participate”.
Commenting on the students initiatives, Mr. Bhargava concluded “Our school is a large mix of diverse culture in Abu Dhabi and prides itself not only on academic success, but also on creating school ethos which connects community at its heart. We actively encourage all students to get involved in charitable activities locally and internationally. Although our starting point was altruistic, we’ve found that by giving something to others we’re reaping rich rewards as a school of relevance. Specially, this is the Year of Zayed and the students touched base with his values and sure to inspire and contribute humanitarianly more next time.

Best wishes to the entire team and I am sure that this will be an inspiration for the student community of Abu Dhabi Indian School to continue with sustained interest and effort to serve the community around.

When the fingers speaks!
A tribute to my guru late Korambu Subramanian Nampoothiri.
A comment on one of my earlier post about him prompted me to sit down and record this video.
I was lucky to learn mridangam from him during my childhood days. He used to come home all the way from Peruvanam temple, approximately 15 kms away from my home, after finishing his temple duties. Half way walking and half way by bus, to save money for taking care of his family with his meagre income from the temple. The fees that time was somewhere very very small (if I remember correctly Rs. 10/-). There was no greed or instinctive approach to get the students to the so-called mainstream limelight by way of arrangettam within 1 or two months of learning during those days.
Again, if I remember correctly, a group of students including me, did our arrangettam during Koodalmanikyam Temple Festival after several months or years of training. I still remember the songs and my stage fear during that day in front of the large audience. His humble and simple presence sitting in front of us encouraging us not to miss even a single beat.
Again, if remember correctly, Uma was singing and then Rajesh, Ranjith and other stalwarts amongst us joining the group. The small start that day then slowly transformed to a bigger and better version and became the first of its kind in percussion history, named as “Mridangamela”, which is now being diligently presented each year at Koodalmanikyam temple festival by his children with students who are learning directly as well as through online.
I am really worried about the parents these days who force and influence different channels to get their children to play musical instruments or get on to stage with a short stint of direct training or alarmingly even with online training!.
Relax, they are children and let them practice and play on and on… Daily practice is very important. And do not expose them until they are well versed and get the full go-ahead from their gurus.
Again, I am also worried about the gurus who give consent to children performing within a short time period of training…If you do that you are doing injustice and spoiling a genuine talent.
My pranams to my guru late Korambu Subramanian Nampoothiri.as I present this practice session of today. Nothing special, just played and recorded what came into my mind. No mathematics, physics or whatever involved….purely divine presentation to him and also to my divine guru Sri Sathya Sai Baba.
Yes, it is also very important to have a good musical system and also great support from the person behind the sound console for the success of a musical presentation. There should be also strict discipline among those accompanying artists to play within the framework and guidelines.
My humble pranams to all my manasa gurus, to whom I listen and observe online as well as through phone or other channels and whenever possible directly and learn various tips and tricks from them.
Each day, yes I practice every day, in front of him and my only prayer to him is bhagavan – when I play, please be with me and let you play through my fingers and not to miss even one beat. Hence the name for this video : When the Fingers Speaks”. Sri Gurubhyo Namah and Om Sri Sairam.
Once again, this is just a practice session and have not followed any strict patterns or guidelines.
