My Letters – Solution for airport woes – The National Dt. 19.04.2011

Travellers from Abu Dhabi airport are blessed with a choice of checking in 24-hours prior to their flight. But the current charge of Dh30 per person is on the high side, especially for those travelling in groups.

Passengers also don’t gain any extra on baggage allowance checking in that way. This service charge could be lowered so that more passengers are attracted to it, thus reducing crowding at the airport.

Secondly, boarding passes issued from the City Terminal don’t carry the gate numbers for departures. Passengers should be guided appropriately to avoid confusion and a last minute rush. A text messaging system could also inform passengers about their flights and gate numbers.

Thirdly, at the entry gate, staff on duty could allocate a priority line for baggage screening to those already carrying a boarding pass, or elderly passengers or those with special needs. This will avoid long queues.

Good and bad signs at the mall – My Letters – THE NATIONAL Dt. 18.04.2011

Good and bad signs at the mall – My Letters – THE NATIONAL Dt. 18.04.2011

Into the second day of an advertisement campaign about a showroom opening promotional deals for customers, I saw a huge queue of prospective and curious customers to the Abu Dhabi mall trade and business centre. Is it a prospective sign and shows increased customer spending? If so, it is a good sign for all of us.
On the other hand, this resurgent interest to visit the mall has created a complex traffic situation in the area. Traffic was slow moving and standstill for most of Thursday afternoon and continued the trend on Friday evening too. Abu Dhabi Mall area forms the mouth of the waves of traffic coming in and out of the city and any congestion in the area automatically leads to blocks elsewhere. It was experienced by all those who resides or work or had to reach the area during that time.
I wish authorities act fast and implement a systematic routing of the traffic to keep the flow continuous whenever such super scenarios arise.
In addition, mall authorities and shops should plan and provide special sales offers to customers only during after office hours and holidays. It will thus reduce access problems to those who wish to reach the embassies and offices situated in the area during regular office hours.

e Nidhi SREE Nidhi – an opportunity to support children who wants to study

Dear Friends,

On behalf of Team 1 Talent Share group and blogs, I wish to encourage, motivate and support poor children to study and progress well in the life. With this in mind, I wish to initiate:

• A Scholarship in terms of a variety of assistance (monetary benefits, books, uniform, support etc) – to those children from families with difficulties to educate their children in the 10th, 12th and Degree education.

• Encourage them to join for higher studies in Engineering subjects (Civil, Electrical, Electronics and Engineering) and Medicine.

The idea now is to plan and provide:

• one cash award each for girls and boys for 10th, 12th and Graduation who gets high marks in the respective exams.

• additional bonus amounts ( in terms of cash) will be awarded according to:
  • The child’s extracurricular abilities like skills in sports and arts will get extra rating.
  • His/her parents education (the lesser the education of the parent and the higher mark he gets, he will get a higher rating)
  • Any physical disabilities he/she has in life will get special consideration and rating

The above are the basic criteria I have thought about for initiating this scheme for the first time.

You can participate in two ways:

  1. If interested, you may join hands with me are welcome to contact me by email team1dubai@gmail.com.
  2. You may identify a needy child and introduce him/her and his/her parents to me so that as a team we could finalise what are their requirements for a successful educational environment to come up in life.

If identified, children in earlier classes of education will also be supported under this scheme.

It is also planned support and facilitate better reading room facilities in school and villages in the rural areas.

As we work ahead, we will fine tune the proposed scheme named e Nidhi SREE Nidhi and make it more attractive and interesting to those needy children in our community.

Thanking in advance my family and friends for the support for the success of this educational scheme.

Looking forward to your positive reply in this regard and then we will work on further to make it a reality.

True regards,

Ramesh Menon

World’s massive home safety drive by UAE

All of us give importance to safety and security issues. This campaign started in UAE yesterday, will be of use to all of us and is an excellent initiative by its authorities.

UAE rolls out world’s massive home safety drive, starting yesterday.
The first of its kind worldwide drive comes in line with the directives of His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed, the President of the State, and under the direct follow-up of his H.H Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime and Minister of Interior.

The campaign aims at spreading the preventive behavior amongst all members of the family through regular visits that carried out by Civil Defence teams to different houses, deliver its awareness message, and distribute campaign guidelines and publications to the family members.

The links below will give more information on the same. I have also added an attachment from the print edition of GULF NEWS, which I hope will be useful for all.

24/7 helpline for Indian workers is a hit, already Sajila Saseendran

24/7 helpline for Indian workers is a hit, already Sajila Saseendran

26 November 2010 Mir Liyaqat Ali’s 15-year-old son, Ibrahim, was hit by a speeding car on November 7 and suffered a femur fracture. His right thighbone broke into two and he underwent two surgeries, the second one on Wednesday.

The driver of the car, which hit Ibrahim, is out on bail and Ali has been in the dark about the legal procedures to make a claim for the damages. When he read about the helpline of Indian Workers’ Resource Centre launched by the visiting Indian President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Ali rang up the toll-free number 800 INDIA (80046342). “I was given a reference number and they said that they will get back to me at the earliest after consulting a legal expert. They were very nice to me,” he told Khaleej Times.

Devoted toll-free number for Indian expats

Indian expatriates needing help anytime now have a lifeline. All they need to do is call the toll-free number 800 India.

Several Indian expatriates like Ali have sought the help from the Resource Centre since its launch on Tuesday evening. Minutes after the helpline number was announced, a person who was identified as J. Jayakrishnan rang up the centre to ask for procedures to follow in the case of a damaged passport.

It was the beginning of a flurry of calls to IWRC, an initiative of the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) to offer a 24/7 helpline and legal, financial and psychological counselling services to Indian expatriates, especially the unskilled and semi-skilled workers.

Amjad Auzam of VFS Global, which is running the Centre, said over 400 calls were received by Thursday evening. “Based on the statistics we collect over these initial days, we will consider increasing the number of agents attending the calls after consulting the Embassy and the Consulate.”

He said that the walk-in counter which functions from 3pm to 7pm daily at the centre in Bank Street in Dubai also received a handful of workers with miscellaneous petitions on the first two days.

Dr K. Elangovan, counsellor (Community Affairs) at the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi, said the initial response to the centre was “fantastic.”

“We hope the members of the community will also make use of the information provided on the centre’s website — http://www.iwrc-uae.com. The FAQ section on the site answers about 170 questions. These are pertaining to complaints that we regularly receive from people. We have formulated them into points and legally vetted them after consulting lawyers,” said Dr Elangovan, who is also in charge of monitoring the operations of IWRC for the Embassy.

Step-wise information related to passport and visa services, death formalities, emergency certificates, workers and housemaids have been given in the FAQ section.

According to Dr A Didar Singh, secretary in the MOIA, lack of awareness about the legal procedures and services is one of the biggest problems being faced by Indian workers. Secondly, they have individual problems pertaining to employment, salary disbursement, living conditions, financial issues and family problems.

These issues will be discussed during awareness classes to be conducted by the IWRC. “The campaign will begin from December 15. Our plan is to conduct at least two sessions on every Friday and hold about 10 sessions in different emirates in a month. From January, VFS Global will also take charge of the Shelter Home for maids and domestic workers run by the Indian Consulate in Dubai,” said Dr Elangovan.

The president also launched a website of the centre — www.iwrc-uae.com.
