Cars running idle for a long period during hot summer

I think we should fine drivers who keep their cars running idle for a long period (A midday break to benefit everyone, June 19).
Very often we get to see expensive cars with their engines on, without a driver inside and probably locked from the outside using a spare key.
The sight is common in front of major offices and shopping areas. This is a waste of valuable energy and may present a danger during the hot summer.
People ignore advice on this issue, just to avoid a few minutes of sitting inside a hot car – something they could easily overcome by driving for a few minutes with open windows.
I think the authorities should ensure that Mawaqif inspectors fine drivers those who do this.

A midday break to benefit everyone

Enforcement of the law protecting workers who are out in the sun this summer period is commendable.

But perhaps the rule should be applied to others working outside. Mawaqif inspectors, for instance, are out all day. Why not give them a respite? While we’re at it, how about a summer free of Mawaqif parking fees? That would be a true win-win.

The Fujairah Municipality’s instruction to employers to provide appropriate light cotton clothing to those who work outside during the summer period, is praiseworthy.

I hope this and more worker-friendly actions will be followed by the other emirates, too, to safeguard those who work outside.

In addition, mandatory safety checks should be made on the tyres used on the heavy-duty trucks and public buses.

Let the progressive actions by the authorities reduce the summer stress for these silent heroes.

Tenancy contract and utility bill mandatory for UAE residence visa

Rule will be implemented after summer break and people will be informed about it: top official

Abu Dhabi: The authorities’ new requirement of a tenancy contract and copies of utility bills to get a residence visa has not been reverted but only postponed, a top official has confirmed to Gulf News.
“The implementation of the decree is not immediate, as the authorities are allowing a grace period for people to return from the summer holidays, and people will be informed of the dates when this becomes mandatory,” the official said.
“ The decision is not targeting any party or property group but it will serve those departments seeking accurate data about foreigners’ residences ”

According to Major General Nasser Al Awadi Al Menhali, the Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Naturalisation, Residency and Ports Affair, requesting a copy of the housing contract or electricity and water invoice to issue a residency visa, is an administrative decision aimed at maintaining accurate records of people’s places of residence.
“Many residents change their addresses, and it has become difficult for the authorities to reach them. Labourers, whose companies provide them with group housing, have to provide a document that states their address along with a letter from the company, or any contract document, that proves where they live,” Al Menhali said.
Gulf News broke the story last week that tenancy contracts and electricity bills would be mandatory to renew a residence visa or to apply for a new one from June 1.
Security purposes
“The decree aims primarily to provide addresses of all residents for security purposes. The decree does not target a specific category of people, but rather provides the residency sector with accurate, updated and correctly documented database,” Al Menhali said.
“The procedure will be unified across the UAE. It is a procedure that is applied worldwide and not only in the UAE,” he added.
A residency official told Gulf News that the new decision is aimed at improving living conditions, as well as maintaining an accurate census of families living in the UAE and the number of members in each family.
“This procedure is to prevent more than one family from living together as currently four or five families share the same housing,” he said.
“Families will not be allowed to share housing,” he added.
Responding to queries Al Menhali said those sharing accommodation must also present proof of their residence by submitting a tenancy contract or utility bill in their names.
“Those working with companies which provide them with collective accommodation must present proof of their residence, an address and a letter from the employer showing where he resides,” he added.
Al Menhali underlined that the new rule is primarily aimed at verifying the residence of all expatriates living in the UAE for security and procedural reasons.
“It is a security, administrative and service decision taken by the immigration and foreign affairs departments in the country”.
“The decision is not targeting any party or property group but it will serve those departments seeking accurate data about foreigners’ residences,” he added.
My comments as follows:
Thank you for the clarifications on the tenancy contract requirements. This is not a new requirement for visa processing. However, the implementation of attestation process and procedures for residency proof documents, like direct tenancy contract with owners, rental agreement with agencies, and attestation of electricity and telephone bills, if mandatory should be done through an appropriate attestation desk controlled by the authorities. These attestation offices should be set up either at the immigration offices or at specific public points and should function throughout after office hours. This will help residents avoid running around from one office to another and can reduce waste of professional man hours for processing residency permits. Linking important facility ownership details with UAE ID cards will help assist this process of verification. Currently, car ownership is done in a similar manner and can incorporate the ones like tenancy details, etisalat and dewa account details etc.

Confusion over change to residence UAE visa rules

ABU DHABI // Confused applicants for residence visas faced the third change in less than two weeks yesterday, and the second in 24 hours.

Earlier, interior ministry authorities had said that from June 1 new or renewed visas would be issued only on production of attested copies of a valid lease contract and utility bills as proof of address.

On Sunday, the ministry reversed that change and said no such documents were required. Yesterday, however, it clarified that the documents were indeed required, but they need not be attested.

The confusion was evident yesterday at immigration offices. In Al Ain, authorities were asking visa applicants to produce a copy of their tenancy contracts. In Abu Dhabi, they did not.

Long queues built up at the customer care desk in Al Ain immigration department as residents gathered to inquire about the new rules.

One, Joshep Ereira, said: “I have been to the immigration office and found out that they are still asking for the tenancy contract and utility bills. There are now endless woes and frustration, not to mention the long lines at the information counter of people all trying to find out about the new residence visa law.

“I am not exactly sure what the region of Al Ain is trying to achieve from all this. People are really going to get more and more frustrated from lack of information about laws changing from time to time in Abu Dhabi and having no effect in Al Ain.”

Meanwhile in Abu Dhabi city another resident applying for a visa for his family was not asked for either a tenancy contract or utility bills yesterday, and immigration officials were processing paperwork as usual.

Maj Gen Nasser Al Menhali, the assistant undersecretary at the Ministry of Interior responsible for residency, said yesterday the revised rules would be implemented nationwide in an effort by the ministry to compile a database of residents’ addresses.

It was necessary to have the addresses in order to reach residents quickly in case of emergency, and the old addresses were unclear, imprecise and hard to find in a timely manner, he said.

Maj Gen Al Menhali said: “No attestation of the tenancy contract is required from the municipality and this rule is going to be implemented across the Emirates.”

He said the decision by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigner Affairs in Abu Dhabi to require the extra documentation was “an administrative decision meant to ease the process of identifying people’s domiciles and to ascertain their place of residence”.

Responding to requests for clarification of the decision and its impact on those living in shared accommodation, Maj Gen Al Menhali said: “The decision applies to anyone who has a home address and will be applicable to all the Emirates.”

A tenancy contract or a water and electricity bill must be attached to the visa renewal application as proof of the applicant’s place of residence, he said.

Labourers who work for companies that offer collective housing must also bring proof of where they live, providing an address and a letter from their employer to that effect, or any form of contract that substantiates their place of residence, he said.

The requirement is intended “first and foremost to verify the addresses of all residents in the country for security and procedural purposes”, he said.

Maj Gen Al Menhali added: “It is a security, service-related and administrative measure taken by the General Directorates for Residency and Foreigner Affairs in the nation. It does not target any particular social segment or property developer; it simply serves residency departments in updating their data, establishing the addresses of people residing in the country and documenting them properly.”

He also said the requirements were not unique to the UAE, and were common in many developed countries.

My comments as follows:


It was indeed confusing reports in the last few days regarding the documentation process for residence visa. However, the requirement of tenancy contract is not a new one. However, the new procedure of implementation of attestation process for residency proof documents, like direct tenancy contract with owners, rental agreement with agencies, and attestation of electricity and telephone bills, if mandatory should be done through an appropriate attestation desk controlled by the authorities. These attestation offices should be set up either at the immigration offices or at specific public points and should function throughout after office hours. This will help residents avoid running around from one office to another and can reduce waste of professional man hours for processing residency permits. Linking important facility ownership details with UAE ID cards will help assist this process of verification. Currently, car ownership is done in a similar manner and can incorporate the ones like tenancy details, etisalat and dewa account details etc. Best wishes to UAE authorities in regulating illegal residents and always keeping accurate on information on its resident population.

നേരം സന്ധ്യയായി.. മോനെ കയ്യും കാലും കഴുകി വന്നു നാമം ചൊല്ലൂ… നാളെ സ്കൂള്‍ തുറക്കുന്ന ദിവസ്സം ആണ്. നേരത്തെ തന്നെ വിളക്ക് തൊഴുതു നാമം ചൊല്ലി കിടന്നുറങ്ങി കൊള്ളൂ. അമ്മൂമയുടെ അനുശാസ്സനം കേട്ട് കുട്ടി വേഗം പുറകു വശത്തെ അടുക്കള കിണറിനു അരികില്‍ ഉള്ള വരാന്തയിലേക്ക്‌ ഓടി. മുറ്റത്ത്‌ നിന്ന് കുറച്ചു ഉയരത്തില്‍ ആണ് വരാന്ത.. ഒരു മൂലയില്‍ വച്ചിരുന്ന കിണ്ടിയും എടുത്തു കുട്ടി വേഗം അടുക്കള കിണറില്‍ നിന്ന് ചെറിയ ബക്കറ്റില്‍ വെള്ളം കോരാന്‍ വേണ്ടി കയറും ബക്കറ്റും കിണറ്റിലേക്ക് തുടിയിലൂടെ ഇറക്കി…
കടകടകട….കടകടകട….ബ്ലും…വെള്ളത്തില്‍ മുട്ടി ശബ്ദം മുകളിലേക്ക് തിരിച്ചു എത്തിയപ്പോള്‍ കുട്ടിക്ക് ഹരമായി. രണ്ടു മൂന്ന് തവണ കയറു ഇറക്കിയും താഴ്ത്തിയും ശബ്ദ വ്യത്യാസ്സങ്ങള്‍ കേട്ട് രസിച്ചു.. സമയം കുറച്ചു പോയി..
ശബ്ദം കേട്ട് അടുക്കളയില്‍ നിന്ന് ചെറിയമ്മ വിളിച്ചു…കുട്ടാ, നീ ഇനിയും കാല്‍ കഴുകി നാമം ചൊല്ലാന്‍ പോയില്ലേ… അത് കേട്ടതും ബക്കറ്റ്‌ മുകളിലേക്ക് വലിച്ചു കയറ്റി വെള്ളം കിണ്ടിയിലേക്ക് ഒഴിച്ച് കുട്ടി വരാന്തയിലേക്ക്‌ നടന്നു… ആ വരാന്തയില്‍ നിന്ന് കൊണ്ട് താഴേക്ക്‌ കാലും കയ്യും നീട്ടി കഴുകി മുഖത്തും വെള്ളം ഒഴിച്ച് വൃത്തിയാക്കി ആകാശത്തേക്ക് നോക്കിയപ്പോള്‍ ആകെ ഇരുണ്ടു കൂടിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇന്നും രാത്രി നല്ല മഴ ഉണ്ടാവും. ഇത്തവണ മഴ നേരത്തെ ആണ്. നല്ല ഇടിമിന്നലും ഇടി വെട്ടും ഉണ്ട്… അത് രണ്ടും കുട്ടിക്ക് പേടിയാണ്.. അത് കൊണ്ട് വേഗം അകത്തേക്ക് പോകാം എന്ന് വച്ച് തിരിഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ ഡും എന്നൊരു ശബ്ദം…തിരിഞ്ഞു നോക്കിയപ്പോള്‍ മുറ്റത്തെ മാവില്‍ നിന്ന് പഴുത്ത മൂവാണ്ടന്‍ മാങ്ങാ വീണതാണ്. എങ്ങനെ എടുക്കതിരിക്കും.. വേഗം ഇറങ്ങി ഓടി. തിരിച്ചു കയറിപ്പോള്‍ ആണ് ഓര്‍ത്തത്‌.. അയ്യട എന്റെ കാലില്‍ ഒക്കെ വീണ്ടും മണ്ണും ചെളിയും ആയല്ലോ? വേഗം കിണ്ടിയില്‍ ബാക്കിയുള്ള വെള്ളം കൊണ്ട് കാല്‍ കഴുകി എന്ന് വരുത്തി ഉള്ളിലേക്ക് ചെന്നു.
അപ്പോഴേക്കും ചെറിയമ്മമാരും ചേച്ചിമാരും ഒപ്പം പ്രായമുള്ള മറ്റു കുട്ടികളും  വിളക്കിനു  ചുറ്റും നിരന്നു നാമം ജപിക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയിരുന്നു…
അഞ്ജനാ ശ്രീധരാ ചാരു മൂര്‍ത്തേ കൃഷ്ണാ അഞ്ജലി കൂപ്പി വണങ്ങിടുന്നെന്‍….
വിളക്ക് തൊഴുതു ഭസ്മം തൊട്ടു കുട്ടിയും അവരുടെ കൂടെ കൂടി വൈകുന്നേരത്തെ നാമജപം പൂര്‍ത്തിയാക്കി.
ഇനി എന്താ എന്ന് ആലോചിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ആണ് അമ്മയുടെ വിളി..
കുട്ടാ. സ്ലയ്ട്ടും പെന്‍സിലും ഒക്കെ ബാഗില്‍ എടുത്തു വച്ചുവോ?
വേഗം വരാന്തയില്‍ കുട്ടികള്‍ക്ക് പഠിക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ടി നിശ്ചയിച്ചു വച്ചിട്ടുള്ള ആ വലിയ വീടിന്റെ ഒരു മുലയിലേക്ക് കുട്ടി ഓടി. ബാഗും സ്ലയ്ട്ടും പെന്‍സിലും ഒക്കെ തയാര്‍…
അപ്പോള്‍ മനസ്സിനുള്ളില്‍ ഒരു ഇടയിളക്കം. തന്റെ പുതിയ ഷര്‍ട്ടും ട്രൌസ്സരും ഒന്ന് കാണാന്‍…
അമ്മെ നാളെ എനിക്ക് സ്കൂളിലേക്ക് ഇടാന്‍ ഉള്ള കുപ്പായം എവിടെ… അതൊക്കെ അവിടെ ഉണ്ട്.. നീ ഇനി വേഗം ഊണ് കഴിച്ചു കിടക്കാന്‍ നോക്ക്.. കാലത്ത് നേരത്തെ കുളിച്ചു അമ്പലത്തില്‍ പോയി തൊഴുതു വന്നിട്ട് വേണം സ്കൂളില്‍ പോകാന്‍… അമ്മ പറഞ്ഞു.
കുട്ടിക്ക് സങ്കടം തോന്നി.. ഈ അമ്മക്കെന്താ ആ കുപ്പായം ഇപ്പോള്‍ കാണിച്ചു തന്നാല്‍… കൊല്ലത്തില്‍ ഒരിക്കല്‍ മാത്രം കിട്ടുന്ന ഒരു അസുലഭ അവസ്സരം ആണ് അത്. പുതിയ കുപ്പായം സ്കൂളില്‍ പോകാന്‍. അമ്മേ, ഒന്ന് കാണിച്ചു തരൂ.. ഞാന്‍ ഇപ്പോള്‍ ഇട്ടു നോക്കില്ല… വെറുതെ കാണാന്‍ വേണ്ടിയാ … നീ ഇനി ചിണുങ്ങി കൊണ്ട് നിന്നാല്‍ നല്ല അടി കിട്ടും എന്റെ കയ്യില്‍ നിന്ന്.. അമ്മ, അടുക്കളയില്‍ രാത്രിയില്‍ എല്ലാവര്ക്കും കഴിക്കേണ്ട ഭക്ഷണം തയ്യാറാക്കി പാത്രങ്ങളിലേക്ക് മാറ്റുന്നതിനിടയില്‍ പറഞ്ഞു..
അത് ഒരു വലിയ കൂട്ട് കുടുംബം ആയിരുന്നു. മുത്ത്‌ മുത്തച്ചനും മുത്തശിയും അവരുടെ മക്കളും മക്കളുടെ മക്കളും ഒക്കെ അടക്കം ഒരു മുപത്തഞ്ചു പേരോളം അന്ന് ആ വലിയ വീട്ടില്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അത് കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ മൂന്നു നേരത്തെ ഭക്ഷണ രീതികള്‍ക്ക് ഒരു ചിട്ടയും അടുക്കും നിര്‍ബന്ധമായിരുന്നു.
ഇനി ചിണുങ്ങി നിന്നിട്ട് കാര്യം ഇല്ല എന്ന് കണ്ട കുട്ടി വേഗം അടുക്കളയോട് ചേര്‍ന്നുള്ള ആ വലിയ തലത്തില്‍ പോയിരുന്നു.. അപ്പോഴേക്കും അതെ പ്രായത്തില്‍ ആ വീട്ടില്‍ ഉള്ള മാറ്റ് കുട്ടികളും സ്ഥാനം പിടിച്ചിരുന്നു..
അമ്മയും ചെറിയമ്മമാരും വേഗം ഓരോരുത്തര്‍ക്കും കഞ്ഞിയും പയറും ഉള്ളി ചെറുതായി മൂപ്പിച്ചു കട്ടിയായി ഉണ്ടാക്കിയ ഉപ്പേരിയും വിളമ്പി… കൂടെ അന്ന് വീണ മാമ്പഴം തൊലി കളഞ്ഞു അതിന്റെ കഴമ്പും ഉണക്ക മുളക് അടുപ്പിന്റെ തീയില്‍ വാട്ടി അതില്‍ കുറച്ചു വെളിച്ചെണ്ണയും കുറച്ചു ഉപ്പും ചേര്‍ത്തു ചാലിച്ച് ഉണ്ടാക്കിയാ ആ ഒരു തനി നാടന്‍ മാമ്പഴ ചമ്മന്തിയും. കുട്ടികള്‍ക്കൊക്കെ കുശാല്‍… നല്ല കുത്തരി കൊണ്ടുള്ള കഞ്ഞിയും പയറും കൂടെ മാമ്പഴ ചമ്മന്തിയും.. ഉപ്പും വെളിച്ചെണ്ണയും മാമ്പഴത്തിന്റെ കൂടെ ചേര്‍ന്ന് ഉണക്ക മുളക് വാട്ടിയതിന്റെ പയറിന്റെയും കഞ്ഞിയുടെയും നിറങ്ങളും കുത്തരി വെന്തുലഞ്ഞ കഞ്ഞി വെള്ളത്തിന്റെ സ്വാദും കൂടി ചേര്‍ന്നപ്പോള്‍.. എല്ലാവരുടെയും… കയ്യും വായും പ്ലാവില കൊണ്ട് കുത്തിയ ചെറു കുംബിളുകള്‍ നിറഞ്ഞു അതിവേഗം അവരുടെ പാത്രങ്ങള്‍ കാലിയാക്കാന്‍ ഉള്ള തിടുക്കത്തിലായി..
വെറുതെയല്ല.. വൈകുന്നേരം വരെ പറമ്പിലും പാടത്തും ഉള്ള പന്ത് കളിയും കുട്ടിയും കോലും കളിയും സൈക്കിള്‍ ചവിട്ടലും ഒക്കെ കഴിഞ്ഞു ആകെ ക്ഷീണിച്ചു അവശരാണ്‌ എല്ലാവരും… ഊണ് കഴിഞ്ഞു പാത്രം കഴുകി അടുക്കള വാതുക്കല്‍ വച്ച് ഓരോരുത്തര്‍ ആയി ഉമ്മറത്തെ വരാന്തയിലേക്ക്‌ പോയി…
അവിടെ അമ്മാവന്മാരും കാരണവന്മാരും തമാശ പറഞ്ഞു ഇരിക്കുന്നു. റേഡിയോയിലൂടെ ഏതോ ഭാഗവതര്‍ പാടിയ ഒരു സംഗീത കച്ചേരി കേള്‍ക്കാന്‍ കൂടി ഉള്ള ഇരുപ്പാണ് അത്..
അപ്പോഴേക്കും… മുത്ത്‌ മുത്തശ്ശി വിളിച്ചു.. കുട്ടാ… വാ, ഉറങ്ങാന്‍ സമയം ആയി… ആ അമ്മൂമ്മ, അതായതു അമ്മയുടെ അമ്മയുടെ അമ്മ.. അവര്‍ക്ക് അന്ന് വല്ലാതെ പ്രായം ചെന്നിരിക്കുന്നു. എന്നാലും നല്ല ആരോഗ്യം തന്റെ കാലും നീട്ടി തളത്തില്‍ പായും വിരിച്ചു മുറുക്കാന്‍ ചെല്ലവും അടുത്ത് വച്ച് കുട്ടികളെ കാത്തിരിക്കുകയാണ്…
കുട്ടി ഓടി ചെന്നു മുത്തശ്ശിയുടെ മടിയില്‍ തല വച്ച് കൊണ്ട് അവരുടെ കാതില്‍ തൂങ്ങി കിടക്കുന്ന കടുക്കാനില്‍ തിരിപ്പ് പിടിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് കിടന്നു… അത് എന്നും ഉള്ള ശീലം ആണ്… ആ തൂങ്ങി കിടക്കുന്ന കാതും ആ സ്വര്‍ണം കൊണ്ട് ഉണ്ടാക്കിയ കടുക്കനും കുട്ടിയുടെ ഉറങ്ങാന്‍ തയ്യാറെടുക്കാന്‍ ഉള്ള കളിപ്പാട്ടം ആണ്.. 
കുട്ടന് നാളെ സ്കൂള്‍ തുടങ്ങുകയല്ലേ… മുത്തശ്ശി ചോദിച്ചു.. അപ്പോഴേക്കും മഴ പെയ്യാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയിരുന്നു. നല്ല ഇടിയും മിന്നലും ഉണ്ട്… ജനല്‍ ഒരെണ്ണം മാത്രമേ ആ തളത്തില്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളൂ അത് കൊട്ടി അടച്ചിരുന്നു. എന്നാലും ശബ്ദം അകത്തേക്ക് കേള്‍ക്കാം… ഓടിനിടയില്‍ അങ്ങിങ്ങായി വച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ഗ്ലാസ്സ് പാളികള്‍ക്ക് ഇടയിലൂടെ മിന്നലും ശബ്ദവും അകത്തേക്ക് വന്നു കൊണ്ടിരിന്നു.. ഭയം കൊണ്ട് കാതിലും കടുക്കനിലും മുറുകെ പിടിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് കുട്ടി കണ്ണടച്ച്  കിടന്നു.
കുട്ടന്‍ വേഗം ഉറങ്ങിക്കൊള്ളൂ … നാളെ സ്കൂള്‍ തുടങ്ങുകയല്ലേ.. പഠിച്ചു വലിയ ആളാവണം.. മോന്‍ വലിയ ആളാവുമ്പോള്‍… ഈ മുത്തശി ഉണ്ടാവുമോ എന്നറിയില്ല… എന്നാലും.. .. മുത്തശ്ശിയുടെ തൊണ്ട ഇടറി.. വയസ്സ് തൊണ്ണൂറു കഴിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു.. ഇനി എത്ര കാലം ഉണ്ടാവും എന്നറിയില്ല അവര്‍ സ്വയം നിശ്വസിച്ചു… വെറ്റിലയും അടക്കയും ചുണ്ണാമ്പും കൂടി വായില്‍ ഇട്ടു…

 ആ നാലു വരി പാടി കഴിയുന്നതിനു മുന്‍പേ തന്നെ ആ കുട്ടന്‍ ഉറങ്ങിയിരുന്നു… നാളെ തനിക്കു വേണ്ടി കാത്തിരിക്കുന്ന പുത്തന്‍ ഉടുപ്പും, സ്ലയിട്ടും പെന്‍സിലും അടങ്ങിയ അവന്റെ ആ കൊച്ചു ലോകത്തെ ഒരു നല്ല വിദ്യായന വര്‍ഷത്തിന്റെ കാലഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ മധുര സ്വപ്‌നങ്ങള്‍ ആയിരിന്നിരുക്കാം ഒരു പക്ഷെ അവന്റെ ആ പിഞ്ചു മനസ്സില്‍….
ആ ഒരു കുട്ടിക്കാലം ഓര്‍ത്തു കൊണ്ട് ഈ അധ്യായന വര്‍ഷത്തില്‍ സ്കൂള്‍ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം തുടങ്ങുന്ന എല്ലാ കൊച്ചു കുട്ടികള്‍ക്കും ഒരു നല്ല പൌരനായി പഠിച്ചു വളരാന്‍ ഭാവുകങ്ങള്‍ നേര്‍ന്നു കൊള്ളുന്നു..

അപകടം – a short story on road safety

എന്നത്തേയും പോലെ അന്നും ഓഫീസില്‍ നിന്ന് വൈകി ആണ് ഇറങ്ങിയത്‌. മൊബൈല്‍ ഫോണില്‍ ഒരു പാട് ഫോണ്‍ വന്നതിന്റെ ലക്ഷണം അറിയിപ്പുകളായി കിടക്കുന്നു. സഹധര്‍മിണി ഫോണ്‍ ചെയ്തതാണ്. വാരാന്ത്യം ആണ്. സിനിമക്ക് മകനെയും കൂട്ടി പോകാം ഇന്ന് വൈകുന്നേരം എന്ന് വാക്ക് കൊടുത്തിട്ടാണ് കാലത്ത് വീട്ടില്‍ നിന്ന് ഇറങ്ങിയത്‌… പക്ഷെ എന്ത് ചെയ്യാം. ഓഫീസില്‍ മാസം അവസ്സനിക്കുന്നതിനാല്‍ ഒരുപാട് കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്തു കൂട്ടാനുണ്ട്. മാനേജര്‍ ആണെങ്കില്‍ ഈ മാസ്സത്തിലെ സാമ്പത്തിക ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങള്‍ എത്തിപ്പിടിച്ചുവോ എന്ന് ഉള്ള അന്വേഷണത്തിലാണ് . ആരാണ് കുറവ് നില്‍ക്കുന്നത്, എവിടെയാണ് പോരായ്മകള്‍ അങ്ങനെ പല ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍ ഉത്തരങ്ങള്‍ സംവാദങ്ങള്‍. നേരം പോയത് അറിഞ്ഞില്ല. ഫോണ്‍ സൌണ്ട് ഓഫ്‌ ചെയ്തു ഇട്ടിരുന്നതിനാല്‍ ആ വിളികള്‍ ഒന്നും അറിഞ്ഞില്ല. മീറ്റിംഗ് റൂമില്‍ നിന്ന് സീറ്റില്‍ വന്നപ്പോള്‍ കണ്ടു ഫോണില്‍ പത്തു തവണ വിളിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

ഇന്നത്തെ വൈകുന്നേരം എന്തായാലും കുളം ആയി. സാരമില്ല ഇറങ്ങുന്നതിനു മുന്‍പ് ഒന്ന് വിളിക്കാം. ഫോണ്‍ വിളിച്ചതും അപ്പുറത്ത് മറുപടി. നിങ്ങള്ക്ക് ഒരിക്കലും എന്നെയും മോനെയും ഒരു വിലയും ഇല്ല… ഇപ്പോഴും ഓഫീസ് ഓഫീസ് എന്ന മന്ത്രം മാത്രം… ഇന്ന് പുറത്തു പോകാം എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞതല്ലേ. ഞാന്‍ എത്ര നേരമായി തയ്യാറായി ഇരിക്കുന്നു. മോനും പുറപ്പെട്ടു ഒരുങ്ങി ഇരിക്കുന്നു. അവനെയെങ്കിലും ഓര്‍ക്കണ്ടേ…. ആ പരിദേവനങ്ങള്‍ തുടര്‍ന്ന് കൊണ്ടേ ഇരുന്നു… 
അപ്പോള്‍ ഞാന്‍ പറഞ്ഞു…. കുട്ടാ, ഞാന്‍ ഇതാ എത്തി… നമുക്ക് ഉടനെ ഇന്ന് ഷോപ്പിങ്ങിനു പോയി പിന്നെ സിനിമ കാണാന്‍ പോകാം. മോഹന്‍ലാലിന്റെ പടം വന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്. ആള്‍ അല്‍പ്പം തണുത്തു എന്ന് തോന്നുന്നു. വേഗം ഫോണ്‍ വച്ച്. ശുഭ വാരാന്ത്യം സഹപ്രവര്‍ത്തകരോട് പറഞ്ഞു ഇറങ്ങി. നോക്കിയപ്പോള്‍, ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ അവരും എന്റെ വഞ്ചിയില്‍ തന്നെ… അവരുടെ ഭാഷയില്‍ വീടുകളിലേക്ക് വിളിച്ചു വരാന്‍ വൈകിയതില്‍ ഉള്ള ക്ഷമാപണം നടക്കുന്നു. ഒന്ന് ചിരിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് ഓഫീസില്‍ നിന്നിറങ്ങി.  ഈശ്വര അവരുടെ പോലെ ചീത്ത വിളി കേള്‍ക്കേണ്ടി വരുന്നില്ല. എത്രയായാലും തന്റെ സഹധര്‍മിണി ഒരിക്കലും തന്നെ ശപിക്കുകയില്ല ചീത്ത പറയുകയില്ല…
കാര്‍ സ്റ്റാര്‍ട്ട്‌ ചെയ്തു പ്രധാന വഴിയിലേക്ക് കടന്നു… മനസ്സില്‍ അപ്പോഴും അന്ന് ഓഫീസില്‍ നടന്ന കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ഓടി കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. ആദ്യത്തെ പ്രധാന സിഗ്നല്‍ എത്തി. യാന്ത്രികമായി കാര്‍ നിറുത്തി. ഓര്‍മ്മകള്‍ അപ്പോഴേക്കും തന്നെ എവിടെയോ കൊണ്ട് ചെന്നിരിക്കുന്നു. എങ്ങനെ മാനേജര്‍ പറഞ്ഞ ബിസിനസ്‌ ലക്‌ഷ്യം അടുത്ത മാസം എത്തിക്കും. ഒരു പിടിയും ഇല്ല. എത്തിച്ചില്ലെങ്കില്‍ കമ്മീഷന്‍ ഒന്നും കിട്ടില്ല. ജൂണില്‍ നാട്ടില്‍ പോകേണ്ടതാണ്. അവര്‍ എല്ലാവരും നോക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നു. 
സിഗ്നല്‍ ചുവപ്പ്  ആയതിനാല്‍  വണ്ടി  നിറുത്തി ..ചക്രത്തില്‍ കൈ താളം പിടിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് ഒന്ന് വിശ്രമിച്ചു. റേഡിയോവില്‍ നല്ല പാട്ട് കേള്‍ക്കുന്നു. തന്റെ ഇഷ്ട റേഡിയോയും ഇഷ്ട ഗായകനും ആണല്ലോ. രതീഷ്‌ കുമാര്‍ – വളരെ ഭാവിയുള്ള ഒരു ഭാവ ഗായകന്‍… നല്ല പാട്ട്. അറിയാതെ ഒന്ന് ഉറങ്ങി പോയ്യോ എന്ന് സംശയം. പുറകില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള വണ്ടികളുടെ ഹോണ് അടിക്കുന്ന ശബ്ദം കേട്ട് കണ്ണ് തുറന്നു.  ഈശ്വര പച്ച സിഗ്നല്‍ ആയി കുറച്ചു സെക്കന്റ്‌ ആയിരിക്കുന്നു. മുന്നോട്ടു കുതിക്കുന്ന സമീപത്തുള്ള വരിയിലെ ടാക്സിയും അതിലെ ഡ്രൈവറും തന്നെ നോക്കി ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ഹേ എന്താ ഉറക്കമാണോ എന്ന വിധത്തില്‍.  അയാള്‍ കുതിച്ചു… തന്റെ വാഹനം സിഗ്നല്‍ ആയി ഒരു മുപതു സെക്കന്റ്‌ വൈകിയിട്ടുണ്ടാവം. അത്രയേ ഉള്ളു. കണ്ണ് ഒക്കെ ശരിയാക്കി വാഹനം മുന്നോട്റെടുക്കാന്‍ തുനിച്ചു. മുന്നേ കുതിക്കുന്ന ടാക്സി വ്യക്തമായി കാണാമായിരുന്നു…. കണ്പോളകള്‍ അടച്ചു തുറക്കുന്നതിനു മുന്‍പ് ഒരു ഭയങ്കര ശബ്ദം കേട്ടു നോക്കിയപ്പോള്‍ വിശ്വസിക്കാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ലാ… ഈശ്വരാ താന്‍ കാണുന്നത് യാഥാര്‍ത്ഥ്യം ആണോ..?  

അര മിനിട്ട് മുന്‍പ് തന്നെ കളിയാകി ചിരിച്ച മുന്നോട്ടു പോയ ടാക്സി കാറും ഡ്രൈവറും പപ്പടം പൊടിഞ്ഞ പോലെ തന്റെ മുന്നില്‍… അതിലെ യാത്രക്കാരനും തദൈവ …. ഏതോ ഒരു ജീപ്പ് സിഗ്നല്‍ നോക്കാതെ അതി വേഗത്തില്‍ വന്നു ആ വാഹനത്തെ ഇടിച്ചു തകര്‍ത്തിരിക്കുന്നു….അതിലെ ഡ്രൈവറും ആ വാഹനത്തിന്റെ സ്ഥിതിയും എല്ലാം കഴിഞ്ഞു കൊഴിഞ്ഞ അവസ്ഥ..

ഞാന്‍ തരിച്ചിരുന്നു പോയി.. ഈശ്വരാ…. എന്തായിരിന്നിരിക്കും സ്ഥിതി… ഞാന്‍ ആ സിഗ്നല്‍ തുറന്നതും വണ്ടി എടുത്തിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍…ഞാന്‍ ആ മാന്ത്രിക സ്വരമാധുരി കേട്ടു ഒരു നിമിഷം മയങ്ങിയില്ലായിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍ എന്റെ സ്ഥിതി എന്തായിരിക്കും…. ഈശ്വരാ. 

ഒന്നും ചെയ്യാന്‍ ഇല്ലാത്ത അവസ്ഥ ആയതു കൊണ്ട്… വാഹനം പതുക്കെ മുന്നോട്ടെടുത്തു ഞാന്‍ വീട്ടിലേക്കു നീങ്ങാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി. അപ്പോള്‍ മൊബൈല്‍ ഫോണ്‍ വീണ്ടും അടിക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി… സ്പീക്കര്‍ ഓണ്‍ ചെയ്തു സംസാരിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ സഹധര്‍മിണി പിന്നെയും സങ്കടം പറഞ്ഞു കൊണ്ടേ ഇരിന്നു… ഞാന്‍ പതുക്കെ മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു. ഒരു തരത്തില്‍ ഞാന്‍ ഭാഗ്യവാനാണ്…. ഇന്ന് ഒരു വിധത്തില്‍ സുരക്ഷിതമായി വീട്ടില്‍ എത്താന്‍ ദൈവം എന്നെ സഹായിച്ചു… ഇനിയും കുറച്ചു ദൂരം കൂടി ഉണ്ട് നമ്മുടെ വീട്ടിലേക്കു… വന്നിട്ട് കാര്യം പറയാം. എന്റെ ശബ്ദമാറ്റം കണ്ട എന്റെ പത്നിക്ക്‌ എന്തോ അപകടം മനസ്സിലായി…. അവര്‍ ഫോണ്‍ വയ്ക്കുന്നതിനു മുന്‍പ് പറഞ്ഞു…. സാരമില്ല…. ഞാന്‍  എപ്ഫോഴും  നമ്മുടെ കുടുംബത്തിനു വേണ്ടി പ്രാര്‍ഥിക്കുന്നു…നമ്മള്‍ എന്നും ഒന്നായി ഇരിക്കും… ദൈവം നമ്മളെ വേര്പിരിക്കുകയില്ലാ. 


ഈശ്വരന് നന്ദി പറഞ്ഞു കൊണ്ട് ഞാന്‍ വാഹനം മുന്നോട്ടു പതുക്കെ എടുത്തു…. ഇന്ന് നമ്മള്‍ ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചാലും നമ്മുടെ അതെ സമയം റോഡില്‍ ഉള്ളവര്‍ ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചാല്‍ മാത്രമേ നമ്മുടെ ലക്ഷ്യത് നമുക്ക് എത്തി ചേരാന്‍ കഴിയുകയുള്ളൂ എന്ന വസ്തുത എന്നെ വീണ്ടും വീണ്ടും ആ അപകടം ഓര്‍മിപ്പിച്ചു…

More bus shelters needed
People either stand near a wall or a hotel close by to protect themselves from the sun

Passengers are forced to cover themselves with pieces of cloth as they wait for the bus at an open bus stop because there are no shelters nearby.
I would like to draw attention to a request that people need most while commuting.
This is with regard to bus stops without proper shelter from the sun, such as the one in Al Quoz. I’m not sure how many more similar situations are happening across the UAE.
Al Quoz bus station is one of the stops that has a good frequency of operation, but what it lacks the most is shelter. I have been to this bus stop a couple of times and everything was fine, except the bus stop itself. I saw people either taking shelter near a wall or a hotel close by to protect themselves from the scorching sun.
I would like to appeal to the authorities concerned to provide at least a temporary arrangement before the peak of summer in order to protect commuters.
There could be many more bus stops that might require this urgent attention.

Very timely report. With the sun at it’s best today with strong wind, even sitting in the comfort of my cars aircondition, I felt it extremely hot. I hope the authorities take note of this summer scenario and re-prioritise the renovation, installation of waiting sheds in all the emirates. It is all the more important as the taxi charges are on the rise, and recommendation to use more public transports to avoid traffic congestion on the road.

Quintuplets beat odds to clear Grade 10 exams
After father’s death, mother raised them single-handedly

Thiruvananthapuram: The quintuplets of Kerala are in the news again. They — Uthara, Uthraja, Uthrajan, Utthara and Uthama — have scored exceptionally well in the Grade 10 examination, results of which were announced on Thursday.

Thus, the four sisters and the lone brother fulfilled their promise to their mother Remadevi, who works as a peon at the Pothencode branch of the District Cooperative Bank in Thiruvananthapuram.

She single-handedly takes care of her five children since the demise of her husband Premkumar seven years ago.

The couple was happy at the birth of five children, though they had wished for one. But their happiness was short-lived.

“They were not healthy. They fell sick frequently. We took them to hospital regularly and it was unimaginable to take care of the five together,” Remadavi recalled.

Adding to the couple’s woes, Premkumar’s business (a stationery shop and bakery) ran into trouble. As losses mounted, he committed suicide.

“Some newspaper carried my ordeal. Thus, the government offered me the current job. Several people came to help. I had decided that I would not follow the path of my husband. I decided to bring up my kids by doing any job at any cost.
“I don’t know how the money will be raised for their education. Some organisations have come forward,” Remadevi said.

The five are on cloud nine as wishes and blessings are pouring in from near and far to their home at Venjaranmood.

“I want to be a doctor,” Uthraja said. Uthara dreams of being a journalist. Their brother Uthrajan aims to be a computer engineer. Utthara and Uthama are confused about what course to pursue. While Uthraja has scored six A+ (for Grade 10 exams, grades are given, not marks — A+ is top scoring), her sisters and brother have fared equally well.

Uthrajan and Uthara prefer the computer science group for Grade 11 and 12 while the rest have decided to pursue the science stream. They plan to continue their studies at Lourde Mount Higher Secondary School, Vattapara.

“The school authorities have offered them seats,” Remadevi told Gulf News.

They were born through a Caesarean section at the SUT hospital in Thiruvanathapuram in 1995.

My comments as follows:

Congratulations to these 5 children and their mother to take harsh life realities head on and reach this far with a winning smile. It is commendable in all aspects on this mother as we all know how demanding educational expenses are and for the children with limited resources to keep aiming on an objective oriented academics to progress in life. Gulf News too deserve special praise to highlight this story with prominence as it will be inspiring to all students from the region and keep reminding them that difficulties if any, are momentary and they have to aim high and stay focused on their goal. Another sense of this particular news coverage was it’s meaningfulness to readers than reading mundane news like some person marrying two sisters at the same time. Family of five survive on leftovers from weddings

Father says he contemplated suicide several times

Al Ain: A family, including three young children, the youngest just two years old, has been surviving mostly on leftover food they salvage from a wedding hall near their home, for over 18 months now.
In a place where food wastage is come across too often, the Indian family of five is determined to fight against the odds to survive, they said, but they don’t deny having had second thoughts. The father, Mohammad (full name withheld to protect privacy), confesses that the thought of suicide has crossed his mind several times.

Crying inconsolably, covering his face tightly with his hands, he said that his little one, who is always clinging on to him, is probably the reason he hasn’t gone that far.

“My three daughters, aged nine, seven and two push me to keep trying my best to survive,” he said.

Whenever kind-hearted neighbours, some of whom are working at the wedding hall itself, inform them about a wedding taking place, the entire family waits until about 11pm or midnight — when the celebrations usually come to an end — and then go to the hall to collect leftover food, with the permission of the workers.

“Mostly it is camel meat and rice and other food items we get. We freeze the food in plastic bags, write the date on the bags and ration it out over the week, until there is another wedding,” said Mohammad, 41, who hails from Kerala in India.

“It felt a better option than letting the kids starve,” his wife, added.

Speaking to Gulf News at their home in Al Ain, the family said that they have been struggling financially for some time now. Mohammad has been in the UAE for 16 years, doing interior decoration jobs in households while his family used to live in India.

Like many expatriate workers he missed his family, but could not afford to bring them here. Then some tormenting family issues back home, forced his wife to attempt suicide as she slashed her wrist. Fortunately, she did not succeed, but Mohammad knew he had to bring his family to stay with him to avoid such situations from recurring, he said.

But problems for him began when he decided to be part of a plan of his ‘trusted friend’ to set up a small business. The so-called friend took off with the money, leaving Mohammad indebted to the loan shark. He ended up in prison but his Emirati sponsor managed to get him out of jail after reaching a compromise with the loan shark.

“Now I pay him [the loan shark] Dh1,000 every month out of the Dh1,300 I earn monthly from my sponsor. The remaining is hardly enough to pay even the school fees, let alone grocery,” he said.

Their house, an almost dilapidated extension of a villa, belonging to their house owner, reflects their plight. The only room of the house has a bed with no mattress on one side, a broken air conditioner and a wardrobe with no doors. Torn uniforms and schools bags are tucked away under the bed.

“It is hardest for the children,” Mohammad’s wife said. “Their friends make fun of them at school, about the shabby clothes their father wears. They feel very ashamed.”

A worker from a nearby home, provides them with goat milk and eggs occasionally, she said.

Sigh of relief


The family can now heave a sigh of relief as a charity organisation, Valley of Love (VOL), has taken up their case. The volunteers are helping us sort out our issue — one at a time. They spoke to the school, who then donated [a] few uniforms. We are hopeful of things taking a turn for the better,” Mohammad said.

VOL volunteer Joseph Bobby said that the plight of the family is probably the worst one he has seen in years of working as a volunteer. “There is no use of sympathising after a person commits suicide, rather the community should help when there is still time.” The recent spate of suicides are what prompted VOL to focus on such cases, he said. Most would have given up long before, but they are brave enough to fight it out, added Bobby
