A JOURNEY THROUGH DIVINE ABODE

An early morning flight, window seat and turbulent weather conditions. Air travel these days creates excitement and anxiety of different reasons.

Looking outside, I saw the sun trying to come out through the white cloud surrounding the aircraft. A nice feeling of thoughts came to my mind.

The beautiful scene outside took me and my thoughts to my childhood days, when we used to sit around in groups and chant our daily evening prayers. It followed a short session of story telling by our grandmother, or great grandmother, or uncle. Generally, it used to be from the Mahabaratha, Ramayana or other books of moral importance and ended up with a point or two to inculcate in our life.

Occasional or yearly visit to a movie theatre to see old tamil/malayalam movies those days added more visual base to those stories narrated. Most of those movies were based on such themes.

I got back to those precious feelings generated the evenings followed after such movie outings. The excitement when we sit in front of the oil lamps, with very little lighting surrounding, the open sky outside and listen once again to those stories and relive and visualize the scenes are precious.

As the clouds moved around I could see all the heroes of those stories which I used to listen carefully.

Those who have had such moments can relive them with me. Others can think and re-create such sessions happened in the 70s. For the new generation, you may recreate them when you fiddle your fingers with the latest computer games.

Rain, rain and more rain at Banglaore and Kerala

A rainy day in Kerala

A rainy day at Bangalore

Anyone from UAE visiting India during July and August will love to enjoy the Monsoon rains. I cannot stop writing about the thrill of being around in the rain from the scorching heat of 50+ degrees which was the case when I boarded the plane. As expected I did get some good rain both in Kerala and surprisingly a heavy one in Bangalore too, not to dishearten me. Because, rain gods know, once back, I will have only these videos left till another monsoon I get to enjoy.

Precious moments, and who knows whether these weather conditions prevail in the coming season. Nothing is guaranteed these days.

Elephant enjoying the rain

Elephant enjoying the rain

I did write about him early. He is taking rest and enjoying the monsoon rain at this special premises near Oorakam Amma Thiruvadi Temple. From the olden days, temple elephants on heat used to be tied down at this compound just next to our ancestral home. It is a site to watch as these pachyderms will be there for months, at times, creating fear amongst all, but mostly a sense of compassion and love as most of us from thrissur, love elephants and know their moods and syndromes better than our fellow human beings. And on this day, he was enjoying the rain, and I felt like watching him forever and ever.

Automated Car Paking facility at Bangalore Mantri Square

Automated Car Paking facility at Bangalore

An interesting feature I witnessed during my recent visit to Bangalore’s Mantri Square. An automated car parking facility to park small and medium sized cars. Although, it cannot accommodate large cars or 4x4S, it is a solution to parking problems in malls. The lower floors that occupied the parking area did have ventilation problem. However, overall, the mall created an impressive outlook and projected safety consciousness throughout by way of well displayed safety instructions and equipments in place and on it’s website. An interesting place to visit while at Bangalore.

Ashtapadi by Oorakam Padinjaare Marath Krishna Marar – Devi Sthuthi

Ashtapadi by Oorakam Padinjaare Marath Krishna Marar

Ashtapadi songs are set in a special raga and tala. It is a rhyme of eternal love and supreme devotion. The literal meaning of “Ashtapadi” is “eight steps”. This video features Sri. Krishna Marar, of Padinjaare Marath, Oorakam, singing an ashtapadi praising devi.

Normally, Ashtapadi is sung, when the sanctum sanctorum (i.e the main door, where the presiding deity of temple) is closed for special poojas and decorations. It takes normally, 10 to 15 minutes to perform these special poojas and rituals. The temple artist, will sing a song playing “idakka” (the percussion instrument used here) praising the presiding deity during this period. Since, Sri. Krishna Marar is from Oorakam, this song is dedicated to Devi, as Oorakam temple is famous for a different form of Kanchi Kamakshi.

This particular song is very auspicious if one listens to it every day.

It was a long overdue task or dream to capture his singing. As he has retired from his official and temple duties, I invited him to home and he was kind enough to sing a few songs for me to record. A series of his Ashtapadis will be uploaded in the coming days as time permits.

This series is my humble dedication to all temple artists of Kerala.

Dancing temple elephant of Kukke Subramanya

The most interesting part of my summer journey. The forest road towards the temple was extremely scenic and quite and it was raining while we drove towards the temple. Reaching there, and doing our routine prayers, we found that it was time for arathi and special pooja. So, with all the devotees we waited patiently and did not give much attention to the little temple elephant stationed inside. As soon as the temple bell rang, I noticed some changes in the elephant and then it became more prominent as the intensity of the ringing increased. As it was dancing, it held on to the bell tied on its neck and was ringing it to the tune of the music played by the musicians.

The temple is specially famous for removing sarpa dosha. Sachin Tendulkar visited this temple and performed special poojas one or two years ago when he was doing badly in cricket. Many others too visit for progeny.

I don’t want to miss sharing a wonderful experience with you all. The temple is very famous and often visited by celebrities.

To read more about the temple, visit: Kukke Subramanya temple Kukke subramanya can be reached by road from Mangalore and Bangalore .KSRTC operates buses on a daily basis from these two places. The nearest airport is the the Bajpe Airport, the Mangalore International Airport, at a distance of 115 kms. The nearest railway station is Subramanya Road (SBHR) railway station on Mangalore-Bangalore railway route, which is 7 km from Kukke Subramanya. There is a daily passenger train service from Mangalore (Train No. 061/0652). The train leaves Mangalore at 10:30 a.m. and reaches Subrahmanya Road Railway Station by 1:00 p.m. One can catch a local transport from the station for a journey of 15 minutes to the temple (approx Rs. 20 per head).

It seldom rains here. To be precise, may be 1 or 2 days in a year. We wait for those precious days and enjoy it as it happens.
