WASHINGTON: Chewing gum was found to help relieve anxiety, improve alertness and reduce stress among individuals, according to a new study. The study, led by Andrew Scholey, professor of Behavioural and Brain Sciences, Swinburne University, Australia, was done on the Defined Intensity Stressor Simulation (DISS), a multi-tasking platform which reliably induces stress and also includes performance measures, while chewing and not chewing gum.
While chewing gum, participants reported lower levels of anxiety. They showed a reduction in anxiety as compared to non-gum chewers by nearly 17% during mild stress and nearly 10% in moderate stress. Participants experienced greater levels of alertness when they chewed gum. The improvement in alertness over non-gum chewers was nearly 19% during mild stress and eight per cent in moderate stress.
Stress levels were also lower. Levels of salivary cortisol (a physiological stress marker) in gum chewers were lower than those of non-gum chewers by 16% during mild stress and nearly 12% in moderate stess. Chewing gum resulted in a significant improvement in overall performance on multi-tasking activities. Both gum-chewers and non-chewers showed improvement from their baseline scores.
However, chewing gum improved mean performance scores over non-gum chewers by 67% during moderate stress and 109% in mild stress

New Delhi, Sep 3: A neglected lot they may have been earlier. But not any longer.
Publishers have started realising the importance of inculcating the habit of reading in young minds at school level itself by focusing on the hitherto neglected school librarians.
A seminar titled ‘Role of School Librarians in developing Reading Habit’ among school students was organised by the Federation of Indian Publishers (FIP) here yesterday at the 14th Delhi Book Fair.
Mrs B Tirki, Deputy Director of Education, presided over the seminar. Social worker Sudha Arora, President of the FIP R C Govil, Mr Ashok Gupta from Pustak Mahal Publications, Mr Naveen Gupta from Arya Publications and Mr Narendra Kumar from Diamond Publishing House were present on the dais.
Librarians of government schools participated in big numbers to discuss their problems and share their experiences.
They complained about the lack of interest from the government in providing funds and manpower to school libraries.
”The pay structure is not impressive enough to make a career in librarianship and there is no hierarchy,” said Ms Charu Mathur of JDSKV, Mayur Vihar.
”We are not merely storekeepers of books. We also need some recognition,” she added.
Ms Tirki addressed the issues by saying, ”The problem is there in the system and every concerned individual has to come forward to solve these problems at their individual level as this is not a problem of a particular department.” She added that a proposal to organise a workshop of school librarians is being studied by the Ministry of Education.

ഇതേ സൈറ്റില് കൊടുത്തിരിക്കുന്ന മറ്റു കണക്കുകള് വളരെ ആകര്ഷകമാണ്. ഏകദേശം 1.8 ദശലക്ഷം വാഹനങ്ങള് UAE യില് ഇപ്പോള് ഉണ്ട്. അവയുടെ ശരാശരി ഈ രാജ്യത്തെ ഉപയോഗം വെറും 5.6 വര്ഷം മാത്രമാണ്. ഇതു ഒരു നിലക്ക് വളരെ പ്രത്യേകത ആകര്ഷിക്കുന്നു. കാരണം, ഒരു പുതിയ വാഹനം വായ്പ എടുത്തു വാങ്ങിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ഉപഭോക്താവ്, ഏകദേശം അഞ്ചു വര്ഷം എടുക്കും അതിന്റെ വായ്പ തിരിച്ചടക്കാന്. അപ്പോള് ഈ രീതി തുടര്ന്ന് പോയാല്, വായ്പ എടുക്കുക, 5 വര്ഷം ഉപയോഗിക്കുക, മറ്റു വാഹനങ്ങള് മാറ്റുക എന്ന രീതിയെലേക്ക് നമ്മള് നീങ്ങി കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.

Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has made it clear that vehicles having a lifespan of 20 years or more will be banned from UAE roads from January 2009. The new rule will be strictly imposed nationwide according to Sultan Abdullah Al Marzouqi, the acting director of the Vehicles Licensing Department at the Licensing Agency of the Dubai RTA.
As per the recently announced Federal Law, starting January 1, 2009, traffic departments across the emirates will stop registering or renewing licences of vehicles older than 20 years. The owners will have the option to either scrap the 20-year old vehicles or export them to other countries. The law also states that from January 2010, vehicles older than 15 years will not be registered and their licences not renewed. Also, motorists with vehicles 10-years or older will not be able to transfer ownership, but will be able to renew it in their names.
According to data released by the RTA, more than 67,000 out of an estimated 1.8 million vehicles across all the emirates will be taken off the road from next year, once the rule is in place. The data also shows that the average lifespan of vehicles plying on the roads of the Emirate of Dubai is only 5.6 years and is much lower compared to the average age of vehicles on roads in the United Kingdom (6.7), United States (8), Australia (10.3) and Bulgaria (15).
The new rule will exempt only vintage and classic vehicles that are more than 20 years old. These cars will be allowed to be registered or have their licences renewed. Al Marzouqi has said that the RTA is currently working on a plan to make rules about vintage and classic cars. He added that there will be a dedicated section to decide whether a vehicle is classic before registering it.

ഇന്നു റമദാന് മാസ്സത്തിലെ മൂനാം ദിവസം. സാധാരണ ജീവിത രീതിയില് നിന്നു ഭക്തിയുടെയും വിശുദ്ധിയുടെയും നാളുകളിക്ക് പെട്ടുന്നുള്ള മാറ്റവുമായി ശരീരവും മനസ്സും പൊരുത്തപ്പെട്ടു വരുന്ന സമയം. ഇതേ ചിന്തകള് തന്നെ എന്റെ മുന്നില് ചോദ്യ ചിന്നങ്ങളായി തെന്നി കളിക്കുന്നു. നമ്മളില് എത്ര പേര് ഈ ഒരു വിശുദ്ധ മാസത്തിന്റെ വരവിനായി തയ്യാറെടുപ്പ് നടത്തിയിരുന്നു? മാനസികമായും ശാരിരികമായും ഉള്ള തയ്യാറെടുപ്പുകള് ജീവിതത്തില് ഏത് വിഷയത്തിലായാലും മനുഷ്യനെ വിജയത്തിന്റെ പാതയിലേക്ക് ഉള്ള യാത്രയെ ലഘൂകരിക്കും എന്നുള്ള സത്യം നമ്മളെ ഓര്മിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. പല സുഹൃത്തുക്കളും ഈ മൂന്നു ദിവസത്തിനുള്ളില് തന്നെ ക്ഷീണിതരായി കാണുന്നതിന്റെ ലക്ഷണവും കാരണവും ഇതു തന്നെ. പഴയ തലമുറയും പുതിയ തലമുറയും തമ്മിലുള്ള വ്യത്യാസവും ഇതു തന്നെ എന്ന് നമ്മുക്ക് മനസിലാക്കാം. ധീര്ഗ വീക്ഷണം എന്ന ഒരു പ്രധാന കഴിവിനെ വളര്ത്താന് നമ്മള് പലപ്പോഴും മറക്കുന്നു എന്നതും ഇവിടുത്തെ ചിന്ത വിഷയം.
ഇന്നലത്തെ ചിന്തകള് എഴുതിയപ്പോള് വൈക്കീട്ടു നോമ്പ് തുറക്കുന്ന സമയത്തുള്ള പ്രാര്ത്ഥന വാഹനങ്ങളില് വചായാലും കുഴപ്പമില്ല എന്ന് ഒരു മത പുരോഹിതന് പറഞ്ഞതു ഇവിടെ എടുത്തു പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. ഈശ്വരന് നമ്മളെ ഓരോ കാര്യങ്ങള് മുന് വിധിയോടെ കാണിച്ചു തരുന്നു എന്നതിന് ഉദാഹരണം ആണോ അത് എന്ന് തോന്നിക്കുന്ന ഒരു സംഭവം ഇന്നലെ എനിക്ക് ഉണ്ടായി. വൈകീട്ട് അഞ്ചു മണിയോടെ ദുബായില് നിന്നു അബു ദാബിയിലേക്ക് വാഹനം ഓടിച്ചു വരികയായിരുന്നു. ഏകദേശം പകുതി ദൂരം എത്തിയപ്പോള് പുറകില് നിന്നു അസ്ത്രം പോലെ പാഞ്ഞു വരുന്ന ഒരു പതിനഞ്ച് സീറ്റുള്ള മിനി ബസ്സ് കണ്ടു. ഏതോ ബുദ്ധി ഇല്ലാത്ത പട്ടാണി ആയിരിക്കും എന്ന് കരുതി ഞാന് ഒന്നു ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചു നോക്കി. ആളുടെ മുഖം ഒന്നു വ്യക്തമായതും ആ വാഹനം എന്നെ കടന്നു അതി ദൂരം പോയിരുന്നു. നോക്കിയപ്പോള് കണ്ടത് മൂന്ന് ഇന്ത്യന് ചെറുപ്പക്കാര് ആണ് അതിലെ സാരധിയും യാത്രക്കാരും.
ഹെഡ് ലൈറ്റ് അടിച്ചും ഹോണ് അടിച്ചും അവരെ അപകട സൂചന നല്കി വേഗത കുറക്കാന് എന്റെ ശ്രമം വെറുതെയായി. എന്നാല് ആരെന്നു നോക്കിയിട്ട് തന്നെ കാര്യം എന്ന് കരുതി ഞാനും വേഗത കൂട്ടി. സത്യം പറയാമല്ലോ, ഇവിടെ അനുവധിചിട്ടുള്ളത്തില് വളരെ അധികം വേഗതയില് ഓടിച്ചിട്ടാണ് എനിക്ക് അവരുടെ ഒപ്പം എത്താന് സാധിച്ചത് . ചില്ല് താഴ്ത്തി അവരോട് ഹിന്ദിയില് വേഗത കുറച്ചു ഡ്രൈവ് ചെയ്യാന് ഉപദേശിച്ചു നോക്കിയപ്പോള് കിട്ടിയത് ഹിന്ദിയിലും മലയാളത്തിലും ഉള്ള കുറെ കളിയാക്കലുകളും. ഞാന് വിടാതെ പുറകില് തന്നെ തുടരുന്നു എന്ന് മനസ്സിലാകിയ ആ സുഹൃത്തുക്കള് എന്നെ ശപിച്ചു കൊണ്ടോ എന്നറിയില്ല വേഗത സാധാരണ ഗതിയിലാക്കി യാത്ര തുടര്ന്നു. എന്തിന് ഈ നെട്ടോട്ടം? ആ വേഗതയില് ഒളിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്ന അപകടവും നാട്ടിലും വീട്ടിലും കാത്തിരിക്കുന്ന സുഹൃത്തുക്കളെയും ബന്ദുകളെയും ആ സുഹൃത്തുക്കള് അപ്പോള് തീര്ച്ചയായും ഒര്മിചിരുന്നില്ല എന്നത് വ്യക്തം. മറ്റു വാഹനങ്ങളിലെയും മറ്റു യാത്രക്കാരെയും അവരുടെ സുരക്ഷയെയും അവര് ഓര്ത്തില്ല.
കാരുണ്യവാനായ ഈശ്വരന് എല്ലാ ഭക്തര്ക്കും അത്യധികം സംയമനത്തോടെ അതാതു ദിവസത്തെ ഉപവാസം അവസാനിപ്പിക്കാന് അനുഗ്രഹിക്കട്ടെ എന്ന് പ്രാര്ത്തിച്ചു കൊള്ളുന്നു.

മലയാള സിനിമ ‘മുമ്പേ പോയവര്ക്ക് പിമ്പേ നടക്കുമ്പോള്’ അതില് നിന്ന് വേറിട്ടൊരു പാത പ്രേക്ഷകര്ക്ക് ആശ്വാസമാണ്. വല്ലപ്പോഴും ഈ കാത്തിരിപ്പിന് ഒരവസാനം എന്നപോലെ ചില നല്ല സിനിമകള് പ്രേക്ഷകര്ക്ക് മുന്നിലെത്തുന്നുമുണ്ട്. സ്വതന്ത്ര ചിന്തയുമായി സോഹന്ലാല് എന്ന യുവ സംവിധായകന് മലയാള സിനിമാ പ്രേക്ഷകരുടെ മുന്നിലെത്തുന്നത് ഇത്തരത്തില് പ്രാധാന്യമര്ഹിക്കുന്നു.
മിനി സ്ക്രീനില് ചലനം സൃഷ്ടിച്ച ‘നീര്മാതളത്തിന്റെ പൂക്കള്’ എന്ന ടെലിഫിലിമിലൂടെ മലയാളികള് ശ്രദ്ധിച്ച സംവിധായകനാണ് സോഹന്ലാല്. ‘ഓര്ക്കുക വല്ലപ്പോഴും’ എന്ന സിനിമയിലൂടെ ബിഗ് സ്ക്രീനിലേക്കുള്ള ആദ്യ ചുവടുവയ്പിന്റെ ഹരത്തിലാണ് ഈ യുവ സംവിധായകന്.

അതായത്, കമല് ഹസന് 100 കോടി രൂപ ചെലവാക്കി ഒരു ‘ലോ ബജറ്റ് സിനിമ’ എടുത്തു എന്ന് പറയാന് സാധിക്കും. പക്ഷേ, മലയാളിയെ സംബന്ധിച്ചിടത്തോളം അത് നടപ്പില്ല. അതുകൊണ്ട് കുറഞ്ഞചെലവില് മലയാള പ്രേക്ഷകരുടെ ഓര്മ്മയില് തങ്ങി നില്ക്കുന്ന ഒരു ചിത്രം നിര്മ്മിക്കുകയാണ് ലക്ഷ്യം.
ഇതുവരെയുള്ള സിനിമ പാറ്റേണില് മാറ്റം വേണമെന്ന് ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നോ?
തീര്ച്ചയായും, നിലവിലുള്ള ഇന്ഫ്രാസ്ട്രക്ച്ചര് മുഴുവന് മാറണം. പുതിയ സംവിധായകനും നിര്മ്മാതാവിനും നടീനടന്മാര്ക്കും പരിഗണന ഉറപ്പാക്കണം. മുന്വിധിയോടെയുള്ള വാണിജ്യ സിനിമകള് മാത്രമേ വിജയിക്കൂ എന്ന സ്ഥിതി മാറണം. ഈ ദു:സ്ഥിതി കാരണമാണ് പരുത്തിവീരന്, ഓട്ടോഗ്രാഫ് പോലെയുള്ള ചിത്രങ്ങള് മലയാളത്തിന് നഷ്ടമാവുന്നത്.
പുതിയ രീതി അവതരിപ്പിക്കാന് ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു, അത് മറ്റൊരു രീതിയില് പറഞ്ഞാല് കണ്വെന്ഷണല് രീതി ആവില്ലേ? അതായത്, ഈ ചുവട് പിടിച്ച് വീണ്ടും സിനിമകള് ഇറങ്ങില്ലേ?
ഒരിക്കലുമില്ല, ഉദാഹരണത്തിന് ഫോര് ദ പീപ്പിള് കഴിഞ്ഞ് ബൈദ പീപ്പിള് എന്ന ശൈലി ആരോഗ്യകരമല്ല.
പുതിയ ശൈലി ജനങ്ങള് ഉള്ക്കൊള്ളുമോ?
പ്രേക്ഷകരെ മുന്വിധിയോടെ കാണുന്നതാണ് പുതിയ പാറ്റേണില് ആരെയും ചിന്തിപ്പിക്കാതിരിക്കുന്നതിനു കാരണം. സൂപ്പര് താരങ്ങളും പരമ്പരാഗത രീതിയും മാത്രമേ സിനിമയെ വിജയിപ്പിക്കൂ എന്ന പ്രചാരണമാണ് ഇതിനു പിന്നില്.
ശ്യാമ പ്രസാദിനെ ഇക്കൂട്ടത്തില് പെടുത്താമോ?
ശ്യാമ പ്രസാദിന്റെ ചിന്തകള് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെതു മാത്രമാണ്. അത് വ്യക്തമാക്കാന് അദ്ദേഹം തന്നെയാണ് അനുയോജ്യന്.
മലയാള സിനിമ രംഗത്തിന് എല്ലാവരും പറയുന്ന ‘പാരകള്’ ശല്യമാണോ?
പാരകള് സത്യം തന്നെ. നമ്മുടെ നോട്ടത്തില് പാരകളായി കാണുന്നവര് ആയിരിക്കില്ല യഥാര്ത്ഥ പാരകള്. അവര് മറഞ്ഞിരിപ്പുണ്ടാവും. നമുക്ക് അവരുടെ കയ്യിലെ ‘ടൂളുകളെ’ മാത്രമേ കാണാന് സാധിക്കൂ.
ഈ പാരകള് യഥാര്ത്ഥത്തില് എനിക്ക് ഊര്ജ്ജം പകരുന്നു. കല്ലുംമുള്ളും നിറഞ്ഞ വഴിയെ മുന്നേറാന് പ്രചോദനമാവുന്നു.
‘ഓര്ക്കുക വല്ലപ്പോഴും’ എന്ന സിനിമയെ കുറിച്ച് ?
മലയാള സിനിമ ചരിത്രത്തില് മറ്റൊരു സിനിമയോടും സാമ്യമില്ലാത്ത ഒന്നായിരിക്കും ഇത്. തിലകന് ചേട്ടനാണ് മുഖ്യ കഥാപാത്രത്തെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. മീരാവാസുദേവ്, ബിനു വൈ എസ്, മാളവിക മുതലായവര് വേഷമിടുന്നു.
സെപ്തംബര് 15 മുതല് ഒക്ടോബര് 5 വരെയാണ് ഷെഡ്യൂള്. നവംബര് 14 ന് ‘ഓര്ക്കുക വല്ലപ്പോഴും’ തിയേറ്ററുകളില് എത്തിക്കാനാണ് ശ്രമം.
