While travelling on a plane, we get to meet different people with different attitudes and approaches. Some get along very friendly and some act serious and remain like that throughout. On a flight recently, I was sandwiched between two gentlemen, who had all booked in advance and one even arranged his preferred meal choice.
As the plane took off and I made myself comfortable, I found my fellow passengers engrossed in a world of their own. There was an element of heaviness from both sides, which was not my kind of thing while travelling.
The stewardess came to serve us drinks and food. I found my co-passenger on the left asking for a Gujarati meal, which he had specially requested. The stewardess went in and brought him his special. It was the turn of the other passenger next and although not previously requested, he demanded for a Jain meal in an ‘I-must-get-it-or-else’ kind of tone. Although not available, the hostess said, she would try to get him one from the crew’s stock.
Watching all this, with a mischievous smile, I asked her, do you have a Menon meal. I will be happy to have one, as I feel very hungry and as you say, we serve homely food, so I can opt for it with all rights.
She knew, what I was up to, as did my co-passengers. Saying cheers to me, both started conversing with me, as the stewardess brought me a normal vegetarian meal available in her stock. The whole atmosphere lightened and we had a good flight and by the time we got off, we became good friends.

Children take part in writing and storybook drawing workshops in Sharjah

Sharjah: Participants at the Used Book Fair have organised a range of activities to expand children’s imaginations and to boost their writing talent.
Students were in for a treat yesterday when they visited the book fair, which ends today. They were given a workshop on how to write short novels.
While a dozen students gathered at the Young Author’s booth, a volunteer from the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) encouraged them to think about the most recent book they read and who was the protagonist in the novel, as well as what happened to the characters.
Extending the story
“Lots of children said they liked the book of Cinderella, so their task was to write about what happened to her after she married Prince Charming and to explain whether she had children, or if she became friends with her step-sisters,” said Cindrella Hassan, an employee at Sharjah Autism Centre who volunteered at the booth.
Although the activities at the Young Author’s booth catered to children from six to 15 years old, they were mostly frequented by students no older than 12 years old. After the workshop the children were directed to the activity area where they were provided with a notebook and crayons to create their own book.
“The children have to draw a picture on each page and write a few paragraphs underneath it,” Cindrella.
“Once the book and the cover page are completed, we then bind it together.”
The Used Book Fair, which is located on Buheira Corniche near Khalid Lagoon, aims to promote the value of books, as well as highlighting the importance of facilitating, acquiring and developing a culture of reading in the community. “Having such interactive activities is good because it encourages the child to become involved in books, otherwise they might forget how important it is too read,” said Umm Hassan, from Syria, who visited the fair with her six-year-old son and four-year-old daughter.
Umm Ashraf, an Egyptian mother, also agreed that children have shifted their focus from books to computers.

“My son, who is nine years old, is always playing with computer games and I was worried at first that he might get bored at the fair. Luckily, he is competitive in nature and soon took an interest in the workshops,” she said.
More than 500,000 books in various languages were available, which were provided by 52 schools and 53 organisations.
Due to popular demand, organisers have also extended the fair by an hour so that it runs until 11pm.
As part of the interactive sessions, the SCHS booth provided children with an activity that enabled them to say their names using sign language.
Volunteers at the booth handed out stickers with the Arabic alphabet that synchronised with the gestures of sign language.

The coverage of World Cup 2011 by KT is gaining remarkable interest by each day. The amazing quality photos and the amount of interesting content covered within the shortest possible time is amazing.
‘First Slip’ calls for realistic criticism and the observations are what every reader wants to have from his own thoughts.
There is confusion in plenty about the umpiring and all these should have been tested, and probable errors should have been eliminated, well before this prestigious event. Multiple analyses for judgment is always good, and should have been the case here.
Talking about ‘Reverse Appeal’, it covers all elements of the matches that are played each day.
From an outsider’s perspective, away from the stadium, it is interesting to read them. Why not include a front appeal at the end with a short prediction of what is in store on the next day’s play. It will be then interesting for readers to see how and what the sports team predict in tandem with our own judgment on the forthcoming matches.
On the match between India and England played at Bangalore, it was made exciting by an absolutely poor bowling performance by the Indian bowlers. Barring Zaheer Khan’s lucky spell in the later part of the game, England won the game convincingly. Even the last partnership proved that India has a toothless attack hitting them for sixes at will.
With one strike bowler and seven batsmen, Indian Captain Mahindra Singh Dhoni has been riding on his luck for quite some time and looks like this is the borderline match that will drift his lucky ride down to a different level.

Need to inculcate reading habit in children
Youngsters from school for challenged set example as they take part in book festival to help promote reading among students.
During my childhood days in Kerala, India, we had very few options when it came to reading. The library was our main source of information.
So whatever printed material we were able to receive had great value. Often, it included old newspapers used as wrapping paper, or magazines brought by visitors.
But as the years have progressed, the new generation is now flooded with various options for information — mainly from paperless sources.
Children have become addicted to electronic games. Words have dropped from their vocabulary. For those who love to read, books are a costly expense, making it all the more difficult.
However, I found a different group of children recently. At the recently held 29th Sharjah International Book Fair, I came across a group of students from the Manzil Centre for Challenged Individuals.
They were there to enjoy the wonderful world of books. They moved from shelf to shelf, excitedly scanning through the displays.
However, they did not want to give away the momentum gained from the book fair. The Fourth Used Book Festival organised by Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services is scheduled to be held in Palm Oasis, Buheira Corniche from March 1-4. This event is meant to promote reading among students, give them an opportunity to acquire books for a small fee and enable them to raise funds for the more vulnerable in our community.
Manzil and its students are taking part in this book festival with a view to create more reading opportunities and literary awareness among children and adults alike.
It is now our turn to help them sustain their interest for reading through donating our old books.

Thursday being the week-end here, normally turns out to be hectic. However, there is one task which finds time slot somehow and that is writing a few words or thoughts for Short Take.
I am sure it has become a routine come Saturday for many readers, and contributors like me too.
It has also become a routine to run through the names of regular writers and not seeing some of them for a week or two create curious thoughts about their absence. It is similar to that of going for regular walks and meeting and missing some faces occasionally.
Recently, I was thinking of this fact more seriously, why not people who get a chance to mingle well do not get along. I have a parrot at home, which has been with us for about seven years. It came to us at a small age and by now, somehow, has picked up the art of repeating whatever we prompt it to. Once we identified its interest, we encouraged it and by now, it whistles whatever way we do and calls out in the same tune.
It is an interesting and integral part of our home and specially for friends and visitors.
However, we do have a regular visitor who always ignored its effort to get his attention whenever he passed by. I was hoping one day he too became a fan and friend of our pet.
It was waiting to happen and it happened. A few days ago, he came to our house, knocked at the door and also rang the bell. We were in the balcony and did not hear him.
Our parrot, Mittu, has special ways and means to alert us and hearing the bell and not seeing us, it started to whistle in the tone which sounds like “who is it!” It is special and by the tone we know it is someone who is not in his favorite or known friend list.
Not seeing anyone answering and hearing our parrot’s meaningful sound, he changed his mind and started whistling repeatedly as if answering his question. It too repeated in its own style.
We understood by then that there’s someone at the door and came rushing to see the “I don’t care for you” guest becoming a good friend of our parrot. Inside home, we found him taking a special interest in him.
Leaving our home that day, he said, how come I ignored such a wonderful living being all this time. In a way, through his words and interactions with our pet that day, I realised we have serious misconceptions about what we see around resulting in antagonising actions towards them.
A smile, hello or any respectful gesture can do wonders. After all, we live in this world only once. Why not live harmoniously each day?

I was reading a blog post of one of my friends. He has humorously commented on the numerous special days we celebrate. A few years ago, these were not there, but have now become an integral part of our lives. Expensive gifts, lunch, parties all followed along each of them. Thinking more about it, do we need these special occasions to remember our mother, father, children and loving wife? It is a daily affair and it should be the case.
Suddenly this thought came to me. Many are affected by recession and joining the “unemployed” group. Crazy about these “special” days, we tend to explore the width and breadth of our purse and credit/debit cards – just for the sake of it.
Why not “World Recession Day” to wish your friends, family and colleagues? It seems we need a special day for everything. We need a day to remember and warn the realities of things happening around and as a siren of the economically tougher days that we walked past and the days coming ahead till the global situation is accustomed and worked over by all.
It will be a day to remember the importance of diligent saving, the importance of efficient spending, the importance of long term and short term planning, the importance of educating our children the value of money, not getting carried away by plastic money, and many more financial principles that we learn on a daily basis.

Gulf News reader Mohammad Ansar Basrur Habibullah said he was horrified
to see a motorist engrossed in reading material while driving. He said: “I took this picture from my mobile phone while I was on Shaikh Zayed Road, driving towards Abu Dhabi. I was watching the [motorist] for quite a long time. He was actually reading something while driving. We were at a speed of between 80km/hr to 100km/hr and there was light traffic. [The sight] shocked me. People need to drive more safely.”

What the driver was doing is absolutely wrong. We get to see many drivers texting while driving, which is another danger. I request the community reporter too to not take photos while driving, if it was he who clicked, it is also a mistake. Safety First – let that be each drivers motto.

ശബരിമലയില് പോലിസിനെ പഴി ചാരാന് ആരും ശ്രമിക്കേണ്ട കാര്യമില്ല. ഇത് മൊത്തമായി അവിടെ ഭരണാധികാരികള് ശബരിമല മണ്ഡല മകര വിളക്ക് കാലത്തെ എത്ര ലാഘവമായി കാണുന്നു എന്നതിന്റെ ഒരു ഉദാത്ത ഉദാഹരണം മാത്രം. നട വരവ് മാത്രം ലക്ഷ്യമാക്കി, ഞങ്ങളുടെ ഭരണം കഴിയാറായി ഇനി ഇതിലൊക്കെ എന്ത് കാര്യം എന്നാ ചിന്തയാണോ ഇതിനു പിന്നിലെ ശുഷ്കാന്തി കുറവിന് കാര്യം?
ഇതൊന്നും കൂടാതെ, ശബരിമല അമ്പലത്തില് സോപാനത്തില് ഒരു സിനിമ നടി കയറി അയ്യപ്പ വിഗ്രഹം തൊട്ടു എന്ന വസ്തുത കേസും കൂട്ടവും ആയി മൂര്ധന്യത്തില് നില്ക്കുന്ന സമയം. ഇന്നലെ സൂര്യ ടീവി തല്സമയ പ്രക്ഷേപണം കണ്ടപ്പോള് തിരുവാഭരണം വരുന്നതിനു അല്പ സമയം മുന്പ് സോപനതിനു അടുത്ത് മൂന്നോ നാലോ സ്ത്രീകള്, അതില് ഒരാള് ഹാന്ഡ് ബാഗും ആയിട്ടാണ് നില്പ്പ് – തൊഴാന് നില്ക്കുന്നത് കണ്ടു. ഒരു മണ്ഡലക്കാലം വൃതം എടുത്തു ഇരുമുടിയോടെ അയ്യപ്പനെ കാണാന് വരുന്ന ഭക്തന് പോലും ലഭിക്കാത്ത സൌഭാഗ്യം. ആ തങ്ക അങ്കി അവര്ക്ക് ശ്രീ കോവിലിനുള്ളിലേക്ക് കടക്കുന്നതിനു മുന്പ് തൊട്ടു തൊഴാന് ഉള്ള ഭാഗ്യം കിട്ടി. എത്ര പുണ്യവതി. എത്ര മനസ്സുകള് ആ കാഴ്ച കണ്ടപ്പോള് ആശിചിരിക്കാം താങ്കളെ പോലെ ഞങ്ങള്ക്കും ആരെങ്കിലും ഉന്നതര് ശുപാര്ശക്ക് ഉണ്ടെങ്കില് എന്ന്. ശബരിമല മറ്റു തീര്ഥാടന കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളില് നിന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്തമാണ്. അവിടെ ചില ചിട്ടകളും ചടങ്ങളും കൃത്യതയോടെ ചെയ്യേണ്ടതുണ്ട്. അതില് വസ്ത്രധാരണ രീതിയും കയ്യില് കരുതെണ്ടുന്ന വസ്തുക്കളും ഉള്പ്പെടുന്നു. ഇരുമുടിയും തോള് സഞ്ചിയും പോയി ഇന്ന് പരിഷ്കരിച്ചു വാനിട്ടി ബാഗും നീട്ടി അഴിച്ചിട്ട മുടിയും ഒക്കെ ആയി ഇപ്പോള് അവസ്ഥ.
എത്ര സുരക്ഷാ വിധികള് ഉണ്ടെങ്കിലും, കണ്ണ് വെട്ടിച്ചു കക്കാന് കയറുന്ന കള്ളനെ പോലെ, അഥവാ, എത്ര സുശക്തമായ പ്രതിരോധം ഉണ്ടെങ്കിലും ഗോള് അടിക്കുന്ന കളിക്കാരനെ പോലെ, അയ്യപ്പ) ഇത്തവണ മണ്ടലക്കാലത്ത് സ്വാമിയും ഒരു ഗോള് അടിച്ചു. അതേവരെ എല്ലാം കൃത്യമായി നടന്നിരുന്ന ഒരു മണ്ഡല കാലം കണ്ണീരില് കുതിര്ന്നു നിമിഷങ്ങള്ക്കകം.
