Mind Speaks – Sreesanth will come in to the team for the final eleven of World Cup 2011

As a cricket lover from Kerala, it is sad to see the 15 names announced for World Cup Cricket 2011 without Sreesanth in it.

I believe, Sreesanth lost the chance not because he lack ability but because of “his mind’s extra agility” which is making the Indian team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni vary of his plans. Two years ago itself he has told in an interview and I have quoted his statement in a blog post as early as October 2008 (I was reading an article in which Mahindra Singh Dhoni was expressing his comments about his wish to have a good bowler who bowls according to the captains plans).

(To read the above comment – please read my post Mind Speaks – Unsung heroes and untimely aggressions http://clicksandwrites.blogspot.com/2008/10/mind-speaks-unsung-heroes-and-untimely.html )

He at that time clearly mentioned, I want someone who bowls each ball according to the instructions I give. I am not negating here that Sreesanth bowls against Dhoni’s will. But, within his mind Sreesanth has an aggressive player and the conflict to overpower the opposition batsman on his own skills, he end up going against the tide, which may indirectly making his progress difficult. This is an example. However, it doesn’t mean that it is the end of the world. He will fight and come up. As each time, or time has proved that end of the day, Dhoni had no other options, within Indian Fast – medium Fast bowling resource, other than Sreesanth to look forward to when it matters aggression and skills combined within one.

Hope, this treatment, or experience in life will make Sreesanth a more striking bowler in terms of economy and wickets than in terms of hits on twitter and media.

I hope and wish he comments no further as it may reduce his chances further.

I still believe, before the tournament begins, there will be omissions and Sreesanth will play in the final eleven for India in the 2011 World Cup tournament.

Best Wishes to Team India.

Poste Note: In the current sereis between South Africa and India, including this 3rd match Sreesanth did not play. If the team combination before the selection to the final 15th for world cup was an indicator, it was clear that Sreesanth was not in the scheme of things planned by Mahendra Singh Dhoni. In a way it is good for Sreesanth too, as the playing conditions in South Africa are not the same as that of in India. So, the more these selected bowlers play in South Africa, the more the chances for injuries, which may help him to get his spot back into the 15 member squad.

Sabarimala Pulmedu stampede – an incident that could have been avoided

Sabarimala Pulmedu stampede – an incident that could have been avoided

In a recent video community journalism report I had clearly mentioned (please refer my video community journalism report in Mathrubhumi online) about the lack of vision for safety by those responsible authorities related to Sabarimala pilgrimage. It is really sad to see an accident of huge magnitude like this happen yesterday. In case of a bus accident, or overcrowded programme venue stampede without proper crowd management facilities in place, the authorities rush and blame those owners as responsible, here the concerned forest and government authorities are to be held responsible for allowing lakhs of devotees to concentrate at Pullumedu and then without even arranging necessary police or authorities assistance for a safe and easy dispersal after the Makara Jyothi.
All concerned, irrespective of Devaswom Board, district authorities, Forest Authorities are equally responsible for this accident to happen.
It would have been a similar story within sannidhanam, if not the police force raised their performance level to the maximum best, irrespective of the extreme hardship and lack of facilities they had to face during this special duty season. We would have definitely witnessed another massacre of this kind at either Sannidhanam or Pampa. They were well controlled.
However, the duty of effectively policing the police remains within the authorities concerned and this area should have been highlighted as a vulnerable zone considering the fact that it was opened for traffic by the authorities. Added to it, the news and reports by all concerned parties before noon time yesterday (14.01.2011) should have alerted the concerned authorities to forewarn the pilgrims of order and discipline required while descending. Extra police force and announcement systems would have temporarily sufficed this sudden concentration of pilgrims. I wish, sincerely wish, if at least 1/4th of the authorities who rushed to the spot thought about such a situation and preventive measures. This includes the honorable Devaswom Minister and Forest Minister and all other concerned authorities, without forgetting the role of Sabarimala Devaswom Board and it’s members role to ensure safety of pilgrims during sabarimala season.
It is sad and hope the authorities learn at least now, to give value to the life of pilgrims rather than concentrating on the revenue generated.
I pray to god for the peace of the departed souls and to give courage to those near and dear ones who lost them.

In my video community report enclosed in this blog post, you may listen to my repeated request to the authorities to act before a danger happens and not after. Unfortunately, it happened despite of several attempts to highlight these dangers to responsible parties through various medium.

Reason for my Safety initiatives – Mrs. Victoria D’Souza and family

Reason for my Safety initiatives – Mrs. Victoria D’Souza and family

I was not very much bothered about safety till a few years ago. It was in March 2007 that I started keeping a more serious look at road safety. On 26th March 2004, my mathematics teacher from school and her family members, six of them perished in a car accident here in Abu Dhabi. The new Corniche road, i.e. the Eastern Corniche road was being built and the road work was progressing swiftly during those days. Every day, the road directions and route changed, sometimes widening and some narrowing at various stretches. Mrs. D’Souza and family were on a visit to Abu Dhabi from Dubai and it was at one such stretch, a speeding driver drove past their vehicle hitting it. The vehicle was driven by her daughter in law. It was a brand new Land Rover car and they were all coming to Abu Dhabi to meet relatives after purchasing it. She lost control and hit the dividers on the side and the vehicle caught fire instantly. Incidentally, the tank was full and the doors got jammed and they were unable to come out or even rescued by those who approached after the collision.

It was a tragedy, which I can never forget. Mrs. Victoria D’souza was with us in Don Bosco High School and then she moved over here and was working as a Supervisor in one of the schools in Dubai. Her children were known to me from childhood and this was one incident very difficult to forget.

After this, I have always raised my concern over road safety and dangerous driving issues. It is a tribute to them. May their souls rest in peace.

Photo Speaks – End of an era – Rivoli Building Abu Dhabi

Photo Speaks – End of an era

The Rivoli building in Hamdan Street of Abu Dhabi. It has been marked for demolition. Almost reaching its 30s or may be more, it was one of the spacious and beautiful building in Abu Dhabi in the olden days. Now that the tenants have been evicted, very soon, it will be demolished and we will get to see another new structure coming up in place.

For me, it holds a very special memory. One of my friend, late Mr. Sai Krishnan, was living there. A few years ago, he fell into the hands of some fraudsters and trapped in a financial fraud and ended his life by jumping from his apartment in the top floors of this building. Every day when I drive by, I think of him and his pleasing smile and serving attitude. It was serving as a memorial structure for him and to my thoughts about him.

May his soul rest in peace.

For the benefit of those who are visiting Sabarimala this season- if possible, please avoid Swami Ayyapan road if it is raining

During a short visit to Kerala, utilising the UAE National Holidays, I had the privilege to visit Sabarimala Temple for a quick darshan. I used to visit the temple every year till 1995 and it was after a long gap, I was able to make a trip to this very important temple and have darshan of Swami Ayyappa. Although, I used to take the 41 days religious rituals during this season, somehow or other visiting the temple eluded from me till this year, which I used to diligent perform from a very small age till the visit in ’95. It was all sudden and as it turned out, and as those who came along with me and all others who were present there conveyed, it was a call on duty with a divine purpose.

Although, I used to take the 41 days religious rituals during this season, somehow or other visiting the temple eluded from me till this year. It was all sudden and as it turned out, and as those who came along with me and all others who were there mentioned that this unplanned visit, especially the descend from sannidhanam to pampa was planned by Swami Ayyappa. The road was extremely dangerous, and since I was not in touch with anyone with regards to the conditions prevailing, and also the fact that there was a kanni ayyappa (who was visiting sabarimala for the first time), I opted to take Swami Ayyappan road, to show the way. As we moved down, it was like, one of the dangerous steps I took in my life. The person who was along with me was aged and found the slippery road too difficult. To add to our woes, there were continuous stream of heavily loaded tractors driving upwards to sannidhanam along with donkeys loaded with goods, and dolly (manual carts in which elderly or physically challenged are carried on shoulders to sannidhanam). The rush upwards was heavy on that day and then the police personnel diverted all those who were coming down to use this road making it really busy.
Everyone who used this road, used the same path and as we moved on, it became more and more difficult and the steep descend for us were equally or more steep for the fully loaded tractors. Any moment a devotee or a donkey cross in front of these tractors, these drivers were left with no option to control the vehicle and hold it without coming down. The wheels rotating and the muddy road with intermittent rain, made it skid and move towards the pilgrims, and all those behind it.
After seeing two such occasions, I couldn’t resist myself from highlighting this issue, as I found no police personnel, no ayyappa seva sangam volunteers or any other helping hands to rescue or direct those affected from this dangerous situations.

The following self explanatory pictures are added with brief narrations for the benefit of better understanding the situation I witnessed.

Rush of pilgrims on that day at Sabarimala

Swami Ayyappan Road – pilgrims descending down to Pampa rush towards any available space as they listen to the sound of horns of the arriving tractor. The space is just enough for a tractor, with loads on both side to pass, with difficulty.
You may see those workers carrying heavy load on their head also resorting to climb upstairs, either wait or continue walk till the tractor pass by.

Here comes a heavily loaded tractor

And here descends a tractor. If you notice, the driver is standing, may be literally on the breaks to control the vehicle to a stop, on the slippery conditions.
This poor driver had to apply break at the corner, eventhough he had continuously alerted those coming down with whistle and horn, someone ran in front and had to apply the break. For nearly 15 minutes, for all those watching from the side and upstairs, it was life and death situation for the driver and for all those behind, as he had absolutely no control on the vehicle as it continued to come down.

Left with few contact numbers that came to my mind, I called up Amrita TV team in UAE, who in turn informed the reporters stationed at Sabarimala and captured the scene. Calls to Mathrubhumi helped me to get the direct number of Kerala Chief Minister Sri V S Achuthanandan and his Personal Assistant , after listening to me from the location, requested me to appraise the situation to the Devaswom Minister. A call to his office and talk with his Personal Assistant, I was assured, necessary measures will be taken with immediate effect.

Upon return, I thought of highlighting it further and a timely video news coverage on Amrita TV channel and a Community Journalism Video report in Mathrubhumi online and a few emails to concerned authorities have made sure that the road conditions prevailing at Swami Ayyappan road will be improved for the benefit of devotees visiting Sabarimala this season and in future.
I thank all concerned especially Amrita TV team at Abu Dhabi and Sannidhanam and Mathrubhumi Online team for timely assistance and willingness shown to highlight this problem with importance.
As satisfying it may be for a person who value the safety of those around and also from a Non-Resident Indian working in the gulf who rarely get to see heavy rain, it started raining heavily as we drove away from Pampa. I enjoyed the rain, heavy rain, and all along was thinking of the thousands of devotees who were either climbing up or down, or stationed at Sannidhanam and Pampa.

With this community report, I kindly request those who read to circulate it amongst those who benefit from it on the dangers of using this road, when it is raining, and till the time the authorities define appropriate safety measures, for the tractor drivers, the dolly operators, the donkey operators and the poor animals and of course thousands of pilgrims visiting Sabarimala this season.

I also:

– request the authorities to kindly install necessary sign boards informing devotees not to rush and run down on the slopes as it is dangerous for them as well as those elderly or children who may be on their way.

– request the authorities to kindly place necessary police and ayyappa seva sangam volunteers on Swami Ayyappan Road to control the smooth passage of devotees and load carrying vehicles or animals till the time appropriate measures are in place for improved safety.

– request the authorities to kindly install ropes or other type of support system for devotees to hold and grip while they descend, especially on the numerous shortcuts which are extremely dangerous, and deceptive.

– although a repeat, I humbly request all young and regular devotees to patiently descend without rushing, as it is extremely dangerous for all those who use the same road for journey up and down.

More to be done and my personal efforts in this will be continued in this direction in the near future.

Latest update as on 15.12.2010

The above is the print screen shot of a news reported in Manorama Newspaper online and print dated 15.12.2010.  Kerala Government have now approved a 5.5 crore budget to increase the width of the road from present 3.5m to 5 mts and build a wall on the dangerous edges enroute this road. There are plans to have additional or sufficient path for walking. It will be a concrete road. Since any expenditure above 10 lakhs needs special permission from an ombudsman and his approval is required, the proposal will be submitted to him shortly by the concerned authorities. I sincerely hope this will be approved and the road work will get done before the next Sabarimala Season.

Photo and Mind Speaks – Divine colors

A simple but beautiful kalam (or religious platform) prepared using rice powder, turmeric, kumkum, and powdered leaves. This is normally done before keralites hindu priests when they do pooja at home, where idols are not used. They prepare this platform and do sankalpam (meditate upon) the god or godess and perform the pooja.

What is amazing is the efficiency with which the priest(s) draw these? It leads us immediately to the simple management principles of concentration, focus and goal.

In one way or other, we do pray and conduct all these rituals for achieving one or all of the above.

Mind Speaks – India – Australia 2nd ODI at Vishakapatanam

An interesting match played between India and Australia. Thank god it didn’t rained runs this time.

As a team, India is improving and claiming it’s stature in all forms of the game. The players showed that they are more serious about their place in the playing eleven and did not take it for granted. It was eminent from the performance of Yuvraj Singh and Virat Kohli. Once again, Yuvraj, although played well, tend to loose his focus and did not stay till the end. He should have continued and forced his dominance on this depleted bowling side of Australia.

With every match he plays, Suresh Raina is proving to be the gem that was carved out of Greg Chappel’s era. The way he comes out and play his innings effortlessly is a treat for all cricket lovers.

Virat Kohli also showed how important it is for the players now to come and deliver when needed. His post match comments and reference to Murali Vijay’s guidance to him during the match shows how the younger generation capitalising from the experiences of T20 matches.

Not to forget R Ashwin. A player to watch for many matches and season has arrived. Our bowling department is a weak link and the wicket taking and run restricting capabilities he possess and overall temperament with which he plays the game has to be commented.

Wish we had the same bench strength in bowling department.

Looking forward to a face saving innings by Australia in Goa on 24th October. The body language shows, they are already out of it.

Mind Speaks – Common Wealth Games 2010 and way forward

Mind Speaks – Common Wealth Games 2010 and way forward

Indian sporting events is passing through one of its glorious periods. On one side, Indian cricket team beat Australia convincingly 2-0 in a home series. With most of the visiting Australian players or for that matter leading players from any rival cricketing nations get accustomed to Indian playing conditions courtesy IPL, playing in India is not anymore complicated. The determination shown by those who got selected to the Indian team in the absence of the injured to opportunistically utilize the match conditions and gain advantage over Australia is remarkable. This shows how cricket as a sport has evolved in India. It could not be achieved by the tremendous support of corporate bodies and BCCI organizational skills to promote the game and develop it to be on top of the list.

Concurrently, a set of different sports personalities have put their best effort in the Common Wealth Games 2010 competitions. The results were extremely impressive. It was a delight to watch the finals of the 4×400 meters relay race for women.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kezboiU3l-w&playnext=1&videos=kA_bOn9bizc&feature=mfu_in_order

The short framed Indian athletes put their heart and soul into their feet to stay ahead till the finishing line with their swift strides. This memory will remain forever as do the winning moments from the other games played so far.

With Saina Nehwal’s victory in Badminton, India finished a historic 2nd place in Common Wealth Games 2010.

These achievements are of immense importance to overall sporting growth of the country, as well the region. It should not be considered as India’s only achievement rather should be treated as an inspirational step for the entire region to excel in track and field sporting activities.

Too much emphasize and money is now channeled to some sports, ignoring the importance of track and field games. To cash in on the interest generated by the victories of the CWG, organizations and regional associations should come forward and promote group and individual sports and encourage participants with financial supports and practice options. Electronic gaming industry have also a bigger role to instill the thoughts of opting for these sporting events by creating new games and toys to generate interest amongst children. Schools and universities should also encourage students to participate in one sport at least as a personality development programme.

Indian women athletes performed exceedingly well winning 13 gold medals out of 38 golds won by India in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games 2010.

http://www.dnaindia.com/videos/1453132

For all those who generated such a hue and cry, it is time to revert with a word or two of congratulations to those athletes who did their best to erase entirely the bad momentum generated to the curtain raiser of CWG . It’s also because; they are and will remain unknown if necessary support from all concerned is not in place from now on.

Post event scenario, I am extremely happy to read reports coming in from India, where the authorities have already started actions to find out the reasons for all the wrong doings and book those evil doers. It will be a great lesson and way forward procedure. We definitely look forward with optimism and hope that corruption will no longer be tolerated.
The link below will give a detailed list of all the 404 participants who represented India in the the 2010 Common Wealth Games. The spreadsheet is hyperlinked and thus you can click on the individual names and get the players profile. As you may notice, a google search of many of the players details and updated statistics are never available for these sports events. It shows the important different between the organisational support a cricket player gets and players from other sports, specially track and field gets in India.

For list of participants:
Organisations and associations have to come forward and do more for these silent heroes.

Mind Speaks – Flowing against the flow – Do we really care for our nature

One of the most beautiful waterfalls in Kerala and for that matter in India, Athirappally and Vazhachal falls generate plenty of tourist interest. Any time you visit the falls, you will see tourists in plenty, including those from outside India. It is one of the most favorite spots amongst tourism promoters.

Athirappilly Falls is a part of Chalakudy river and it is approximately 80 feet in height. Athirappilly is easily reachable from Chalakudy by taking a vehicle for rent or by bus from the Chalakudy private bus terminal. This area is the only place in the Western Ghats where four endangered Hornbill species are seen. The Western Ghats is one of the most important biodiversity hot spot in the world.

The falls situated amongst thick forestation, filled with a wealth of wild life and plantations. They include special plants, trees and even butterflies, and varieties of birds. The area also has good fairly large presence of wild elephants, deers and monkeys, who at times, visit the road towards the falls. The same stretch extends towards Tamilnadu and easy route to Pollachi connecting Chalakudi. In order to prevent accidents and for the safety of the animals as well as the road users, traffic at night is restricted on this road.
It is one of the best feeling you every get as you go nearer to the falls. From the top as well as the side extension slippery pathway reaching the downside of it. One has to be cautious not to go nearer to the edge, if on top and also get closer to the falls, if viewing from down. There are forest guards posted to monitor erring visitors, whose life may be in danger, due to a slippery rock, or due to sudden increase of water flow due to water level adjustments happening at the dam above or even due to big timber blocks being washed down from the mountain tops as a result of heavy rain.

In most cases, the visiting tourists are obedient and they silently enjoy the beauty and have a quality time at a very nominal visiting charge and then return. However, you may get to see some unruly crowd who may break glass bottles on the rocks or throw away plastic bottles deep inside the forest.
Do they really care about the safety and harmonious continuity of their fellow beings or even the silent living beings around? Realistically speaking no. It is very interesting to walk around the falls and forest nearby with support of guides and you may get to see several wild animals.
However, a look around during a recent visit and a walk through the deeper side of the falls downside invited our attention to the area being used a free dumping ground for plastic bottles and other trash.

I can never conclude this write up about this beautiful place and some of the regular faces I get to meet each time I visit. They are in plenty, and although surrounded by waterfalls, they too have to rely on the water droplet and stream of water from the spills and falls. The opportunities and experiences we get watching them are enormous.
For example, the click above. The first one resulted in me getting into the first five of the Malayala Manorama Jeevajalam competition in 2008.
It is time we start caring about our mother nature and perennial source of water. It is precious and rate at which it is depleting is faster than the one that which takes the bottle you throw to reach the ground.
Enjoy the beauty of the falls from the down and the stream of water travelling towards it and along with the flow, or rather against the bigger flows. In a way, we have to unite to do the same to keep our environment neat and clean.

Access to clean water is not just a human rights issue. It’s an environmental issue. An animal welfare issue. A sustainability issue. Water is a global issue, and it affects all of us. Care should be taken by all to preserve the serene nature and all efforts should be taken to keep it as clean and safe possible for all inhabitants around.
