Driving on our highways, it is pure luck to reach your destination

Posted on Updated on

There was no dearth for accidents this time too on the highway leading towards Bangalore. Traffic safety is a matter of concern. However, we drive safe, there is a danger of someone out there, who is driving dangerously and causing danger to all others out there. On the road photo – taken during during recent drive by Rajashree Menon. True, very true, we do not take a driver, because, he may continue using his mobile, however, we tell him not to use.

Therefore, I prefer to drive on my own. However, from the time we start from our home and reach our home in Kerala and then back at Bengaluru, it is sheer, good luck and god’s grace. The driving habit and culture is too bad. God bless, those on our roads, each day and moment.

Ancestral tree – Short Take – Gulf Today Dt. 22.12.2012

Ancestral tree
Another year in our life is completing, as fast ever as possible. As an individual, I had lots of ups and downs, turbulent times, losing or winning days. It all marked the beauty of the year 2012 that was.
Several people and interactions passed by during this time. Some, I do not remember at all, but certain others, I definitely remember.
One was the trip I took to India to perform rituals associated with the first death anniversary of my mother-in-law.
We were asked by the priest to name our ancestors. He started asking the name of our parents. We answered. He asked the name of our grandparents. With a bit of difficulty, we answered that too. He then asked the name of our grand grandparents. We got stuck.
Our knowledge train about our family stopped then and there. We decided we should find out more details and prepare a family tree.
Back here in the UAE, I met the other day, a UAE national and colleague of mine, who incidentally brought to me a photo showing his family tree consisting of his ancestors leading to a list stretching a hundred years back.
It took him a great deal of time, but he was proud to show me the legacy. Why should we not try to emulate it as a task for the new year?
Explore our way to our ancestors’ memories and roots.

Rain reflections – an unfulfilled wish

Rain reflections – an unfulfilled wish

This picture was taken during a recent monsoon time visit when I noticed the trees reflecting on the pool of water that remained in our garden at home. While clicking it my grandmother was sitting near the window and watching me. She loved to see the photos each time and showed it to her. I told her also that I will bring a print of it when I come next time. In fact during the next visit in October, I did bring the printed version, but in a hurry and due to short time limit, I forgot to show it to her. The click was published in Gulf News too. What to say, all saw it in print, except her as she left this world in November. Hence re-presenting it here once again, as a tribute for her appreciation and affection, which I am sure will remain as long as I am alive.

It was an interesting visit of the Bannerghatta Wild life sanctuary at Bangalore. This tiger was restless after a fight with his mate. Blood was oozing out from it. As we stopped our jeep and as I clicked several pictures, I never realised, it was noticing me. Suddenly, it rushed to me, and my guard come driver alerted and yelled at me to raise my window, and within seconds it was standing next to our jeep. The look – I will never forget.

This and one other click with a different pose of this temple elephant clicked during the beginning of this year, I will cherish forever.

My room mate, partner and model forever. Mittoo. Always ready for anything what I want it to pose.

VOLVO Ocean Race 2012 – Abu Dhabi leg. The first time ever attempted a real sports shoot in a speed boat following these racing boats. It was four hours of real fun and danger. In the deep sea, rough and windy and with the waves, and as a novice, without no protective gears to cover me or my camera. I was with the French news Team and at the end, we managed to cover a lot.

The Formula 1 leg of Abu Dhabi. More than 4000 clicks during the 3 days. Managed to capture three accidents that happened during the final. Or rather, lucky to be there at those precious moments. All the more because, the winning car happened to be sponsored by TOTAL.

A worker working on one of the major sewage relining project in Abu Dhabi. It took more than two weeks for them to unearth and then relay the existing lines and install new ones in our area. Lot of hard work. It also brought out to me how they silently contributed to the progress of a nation.

Finally, reminiscence of the departure of my loving grandmother. She was everything for me. I wish, I got more time than the time I spent after her death, to be with her when she was alive. It made me realise one more time, be with those who love and live for, when they are alive than when they are no more.

When the clouds said hello

Posted on Updated on

For a Pravasi (non-resident indian) from a gulf country, this was one of the greatest site to remember for a long long time. With hardly any rain where I work, the rain clouds and the heavy rain that followed the breeze, although dangerous for our drive ahead, was really a memorable event. Who’s the person who wrote – rain, rain go away……I wish, he was here with me enjoying the hot summer.

Mid-day break rule would help companies provide shade to workers
By Ramesh Menon, Gulf News Reader Published: 16:35 October 27, 2012

The summer holidays are over and work has returned to its regular routine. The mid-day break rule enforced strictly by the authorities was a success and apparently most of the companies involved in its implementation followed it strictly.

However, the heat has not fully disippated and thus, the unpleasant and totally appalling condition of a minority set of worker.

I am talking about a group of workers I happen to see every noon at a prominent sewage maintenance project happening in the heart of Abu Dhabi city.

These workers rest on the road and under the sun in a very sad state. From what I understand, now that the enforced rule is no more active, they are given a choice to rest wherever they can. If possible, companies involving construction workers should consider their field work conditions and assist them accordingly.

I humbly request the authorities to extend the rule as per the average monthly temperature prevailing in each region. I am sure this would provide sustained relief to workers who are involved. –

Breast cancer a year-round worry

Breast cancer a year-round worry

The account about Peter Campbell and his family (Expat’s battle to fly dying wife home, October 14) was timely.

In October, breast cancer month, people try to paint everything pink. But afterwards, concern can fade away. I know this; we will soon mark the first anniversary of the death of my wife’s mother. whose breast cancer was detected late.

Women of all ages should carry out self-examination, and if any small irregularity is seen, they should come forward at once for a mammogram.

Most doctors are compassionate and experienced and will do their best to help.
