Sharjah Vantage Point 6: “Performance” opens
Sharjah Vantage Point 6 opens.
Vantage Point Sharjah 6 (VPS6) is the sixth iteration of Sharjah Art Foundation’s annual initiative supporting the practice of photography within the GCC. Open call was extended to submit photographs from all nationalities who reside in the UAE and Other GCC Countries on the theme of “𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘”.
The opening was attended by distinguished guests, artists, photographers and public.
Vantage Point 6: Performance is organised by Sharjah Art Foundation. President and Director of Sharjah Art Foundation Hoor Al Qasimi is a practising curator and artist, as well as Director of the Sharjah Biennial.
A large number of applicants, with a variety of professional backgrounds, skill sets and interests, responded to the call for Vantage Point Sharjah 6. The exhibition presents a wide-ranging selection of photography, which uniquely expands upon the theme and speaks to the development of a vibrant community.
It is the 2nd time my clicks are getting selected to this prestigious international exhibition organised by Sharjah Art, under the patronage of the ruling family of Sharjah.

Ramesh Menon’s photographs depict the traditional art form Kathakali, which is always a ‘feast for the eyes’ as it enthralls audiences with music, action, emotional impact and literary finesse. These photos capture a moment in the performance of the play Keechakavadam, jointly organised by the India Social and Cultural Centre, Kerala Social Centre, Manirang and Sakthi Theatres in Abu Dhabi. Renowned artists, musicians and percussionists added their experience and skills to complete this tauryatrika [triple symphony] experience. Dr Haripriya Nambudiri, a full-time professional female artiste—a rarity in this art form—played the character of Syrandhri.
Menon tries his best to create a family of positive and quality-minded people. Bringing creativity into life and never giving up are the two wheels of his life cycle, which has been revolving and evolving a great deal and determined to continue too. He writes a blog clicksandwrites.com and takes small steps towards his objectives to encourage talent and serve the community around. He believes that all great achievements and success in life, as well as all changes for the better, have one powerful characteristic in common: The First Step. ‘Take the first step, and the journey has a way of taking care of itself.’ Menon is an active participant in various Have Your Say programmes within the UAE and elsewhere. This participation has resulted in his winning several prestigious awards over the last few years.

Kathakali festival in Abu Dhabi
2 days of Kathakali festival #InAbuDhabi.
Titled “Kanninakkanandam (feast for eyes)”, Abu Dhabi Kathakali Festival 2017 showcases three plays of the 18th century poet laureate Irayimman Thampi who represents the golden age of Kathakali. Much admired by connoisseurs, his plays Keechakavadham, Uttaraswayamvaram and Dakshayagam continue to enthrall audiences with their music, action, rich emotional quotient, and literary finesse.
Keechakavadam and Uttaraswayamvaram are based on Viradaparvam of Mahabharatha, while Dakshayagam is based on Mahabhagavatham.
Festival opens on October 19th at Kerala Social Centre (KSC) Abu Dhabi with Uttaraswayamvaram.
Keechakavadam will be staged on 20th at India Social and Cultural Centre (ISC Abu Dhabi) in the afternoon followed by Dakshayagam in the evening.
Padmasri Kalamandalam Gopi will reveal another facet of his acting prowess with his Duryodhana in Uttaraswayamvaram and Daksha in Dakshayagam. All the renowned artists , musicians and percussionists forming part of this troupe will add their strength and skills to complete this tauryatrika (triple symphony) experience.
As part of this festival, a Thayambaka by renowned artist Sri. Panamanna Sasi and team will exhilarate the audience with the percussions on October 20th. A musical ensemble titled Carnatic Melodies led by Sri Biju Edappal is also scheduled in the evening.

Added attraction is the Thayampaka – traditional colour performance on chenda, a popular percussion instrument of Kerala, in which the main player at the centre improvises rhythmically on the beats of half-a-dozen or a few more chenda and ilathalam players around.

ഇരിങ്ങാലക്കുട ഉണ്ണായി വാര്യര് സ്മാരക കലനിലയത്തിലെ സീനിയര് പ്രൊഫസര് കലാനിലയം ഗോപി ആശാനും സംഘവും കല അബുദാബിയുടെ ആഭിമുഖ്യത്തില് നടത്തിയ കേരളീയം 2010 എന്ന പരിപാടിയില് ലവണാസുരവധം കഥകളി അവതരിപ്പിക്കുയണ്ടായി. ഇത് നാലാം തവണയാണ് കല അബുദാബി കഥകളി യു എ യില് അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. അബുദാബി ഇന്ത്യ സോഷ്യല് സെന്ററില് വച്ച് നടന്ന പരിപാടിയില് ഒരു വന് ജനാവലി തന്നെ പങ്കെടുത്തിരുന്നു. ഈ വരവിനോടനുബന്ധിച്ചു തിരനോട്ടം ദുബായ് ഒരു കഥകളിപദ കച്ചേരിയും ചര്ച്ചയും ദുബായില് നടത്തുകയുണ്ടായി. അബുദാബി മലയാളി സമാജത്തിലും കഥകളി ആസ്വാധന ക്ലാസും ചര്ച്ചയും നടന്നു. ഈ മൂന്ന് പരിപാടികളും പങ്കെടുത്ത കാണികളുടെ സംഖ്യാ ബലവും അതില് പങ്കെടുത്തു കലാകരന്മാരോട് അവര് നല്കിയ സ്നേഹാധാരങ്ങളും യുറോപ്യന് രാജ്യങ്ങളില് ഉണ്ണായി വാര്യര് കലാനിലയം സംഘത്തിന്റെ കൂടെ പര്യടനം നടത്തിയിട്ടുള്ള ഗോപി
RM: നമസ്കാരം ഗോപി ആശാന്, എന്റെ കോളേജ് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ കാലത്തിനു ശേഷം പ്രവസ്സ ജീവിതം തുടങ്ങിയതിനു പിന്നീട് ആശാനെയും ആശാന്റെ കളിയും കാണാന് കിട്ടുന്ന ആദ്യ അവസ്സരമാണിത്. വളരെ അധികം സന്തോഷം തോന്നുന്നു. ആശാന്റെ സംഘത്തില് ഉള്ളവരെ പറ്റി ഒന്ന് വിവരിക്കാമോ?
KG: സംഗത്തില് പത്തു പേരാണ് ഉള്ളത്. പ്രധാന വേഷം (ഹനുമാന്) ഞാന് കെട്ടുന്നു. സീതയായി കലാനിലയം വിനോദ് കുമാര്, കുശന് ആയി കാവ്യ പുഷ്പാങ്കതന്, ലവനായി ഐശ്വര്യാ ഗോപി, സംഗീതം കലാനിലയം രാജീവന്, കലാനിലയം ബാബു, ചെണ്ട കലാമണ്ഡലം ശിവദാസ്, മദ്ധളം കലാനിലയം പ്രകാശന്, ചുട്ടി ജനാര്ദ്ദനന് എന്നിവര് കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഡോക്ടര് രാജീവ് ഞങ്ങളുടെ അവതാരകന് ആയി കൂടെ ഉണ്ട്.
RM: ആശാന്റെ കഥകളി വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ്സത്തെ പറ്റി ഏതാനും വാക്കുകള്
KG: ഞാന് 1971 മുതല് കഥകളി കലനിലയത്തില് പഠിക്കുകയും തുടര്ന്ന് അവിടെ തന്നെ ഡിപ്ലോമയും, ബിരുദാനന്തര പഠനവും നടത്തിയതിനു ശേഷം അവിടെ അധ്യാപകനായി ചേര്ന്നു. മുടങ്ങാതെ ഇന്നും തുടര്ന്ന് പോകുന്ന അഭ്യാസ്സവും കഥകളി എന്ന കലയോടുള്ള എന്റെ അടങ്ങാത്ത ആധാരവും അഭിനിവേശവും കൊണ്ട് ഞാന് ഇന്ന് ആ കലാലയത്തിലെ ഒരു മുതിര്ന്ന അധ്യാപകനായി വേഷം വിഭാഗത്തിന്റെ തലവനായി ജോലി നോക്കുന്നു.
RM: താങ്കളുടെ ഗുരുക്കള്?
KG: പള്ളിപ്പുറം ഗോപലന് നായര്, സദനം കൃഷ്ണന്കുട്ടി, കലാമണ്ഡലം കുട്ടന്, കലാനിലയം രാഘവന്, കലാനിലയം ഗോപലകൃഷ്ണന് എന്നിവരായിരുന്നു എന്റെ ഗുരുനാഥന്മാര്. ചിട്ടയായ അഭ്യാസ്സവും, ഗുരുകുല വാസ സമ്പ്രദായവും കഠിനമായ പരിശീലന ക്രമങ്ങളും എന്നെ ഒരു നല്ല ശിഷ്യനും പിന്നീട് ഒരു നല്ല ഗുരുനാഥനും ആക്കി മാറ്റാന് നിമിത്തമായി. ഉപരി പഠനം പദ്മഭൂഷന് കലാമണ്ഡലം രാമന്കുട്ടി നായരുടെ കീഴില് കലാമണ്ഡലം ആസ്ഥാനം ആയിട്ടായിരുന്നു.
RM: ആശാന്റെ പ്രധാന വേഷങ്ങള് ഏതൊക്കെയാണ്?
KG :ഇതിനോടകം കഥകളിയിലെ ഒട്ടുമിക്ക പ്രധാന വേഷങ്ങള് കെട്ടി ആടാന് കഴിഞ്ഞു എന്നുള്ളത് വളരെ സന്തോഷം ഉള്ള കാര്യമാണ്. എന്റെ അസ്വാധകര്ക്ക് വീണ്ടും വീണ്ടും കാണണം എന്നുള്ള വേഷങ്ങള് ഹനുമാന്, കീചകന്, ദുര്യോധനന് പരശുരാമന്, ബ്രാഹ്മണന്, ഭീമന്, അര്ജുനന് എന്നിവയാണ്.
RM: താങ്കള്ക്ക് ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള പുരസ്കാരങ്ങള് ?
KG: 2003 ഇല്, കേരള കലാമണ്ഡലം വക കഥകളിക്കു ഉള്ള സമഗ്ര സേവനത്തിനുള്ള പ്രത്യേക പുരസ്കാരം ലഭിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. കൂടാതെ, തനിമ ഇരിങ്ങാലക്കുടയുടെ വക പുരസ്കാരവും ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. മറ്റു ഒട്ടനവധി ചെറിയ പുരസ്കാരങ്ങളും ആദരവുകളും വേറെ.
RM: താങ്കള് എന്ന് മുതല് ആണ് കഥകളി അഭ്യസിപ്പിക്കാന് തുടങ്ങിയത്? പ്രധാന ശിഷ്യര്?
KG: 1980 മുതല് കഥകളി പഠിപ്പിക്കാന് തുടങ്ങി. ആദ്യത്തെ ശിഷ്യന് പ്രഭാകരന് എന്ന ഒരു വിദ്ധ്യാര്ത്തി ആയിരുന്നു. ഇതോടകം 200 ഇല് അധികം പ്രതിഭകളെ വളര്ത്തിയെടുക്കാന് എനിക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞതില് വളരെ അധികം ചാരിധാര്ത്ഥ്യം ഉണ്ട്. ജയന്തി, Dr. രാജീവ്, വിനോദ് വാര്യര് എന്നിവര് അവരില് ചിലര്. ചിട്ടയായ അഭ്യാസ രീതികളും ശിഷ്യരോടുള്ള താല്പര്യവും അവരെ എന്നും കലയില് മുന്നില് തന്നെ നില്ക്കാന് പര്യപ്തമാക്കുന്ന വിധത്തില് വളര്ത്തിയെടുക്കാന് കഴിയുന്നു.
Dr. R: ആശാന്റെ പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്ന രീതിയെ പറ്റി, ഇതിനിടയില് ഞാന് ഒന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു കൊള്ളട്ടെ. പൂര്ണ അര്പ്പണ മനോഭാവവും, സമര്പ്പണവും കൂടി ചിട്ടയും നിഷ്ഠയും കൂടിയ അദ്ധേഹത്തിന്റെ അധ്യായന രീതി എന്നും ശിഷ്യര്ക്ക് ആത്മ വിശ്വാസ്സവും ദൈര്യവും ക്രിയാല്മകതയും നല്കുന്നു. എത്ര കാലം കഴിഞ്ഞാലും ആ പാഠങ്ങള് മനസ്സില് ഉള്ളില് നിറഞ്ഞു നില്ക്കും. ഒരു പ്രത്യക്ഷ ഉദാഹരണം ഈ സന്ദര്ശന വേളയില് ദുബായില് നടന്ന ശില്പശാലയില് ഗോപി ആശാന്റെ ശിഷ്യനും ഇവിടെ ദുബായില് ജോലി ഉള്ള കൃഷ്ണന് ഉണ്ണി അവതരിപ്പിച്ച ചൊല്ലിയാട്ടം ഏറെ പ്രശംസ പിടിച്ചു പറ്റി. ചുരുങ്ങിയ സമയത്തിനുള്ളില് ആണ് അദ്ദേഹം അതിനു തയ്യാര് എടുത്തതും അവതരിപ്പിച്ചതും എങ്കിലും ആശാന്റെ ശിക്ഷണത്തില് പഠിച്ച പാഠങ്ങള് കാലങ്ങള് കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും മറക്കാതെ നില്ക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു അദ്ധേഹത്തിന്റെ ഉള്ളില്.
RM: താങ്കള് ഇപ്പോള് ഉണ്ണായി വാര്യര് കലനിലയത്തില് എന്ത് ചെയ്യുന്നു? കഥകളിയുടെ ഇന്നത്തെ അവസ്ഥയെ പറ്റിയും കഥകളി പഠനത്തെ പറ്റിയും എന്തെകിലും ?
KG: ഞാന് ഇപ്പോള് ഉണ്ണായി വാര്യര് കലനിലയത്തില് വേഷം വിഭാഗത്തിന്റെ തലവന് ആയി പ്രവര്ത്തിക്കുന്നു. ഒരു കഥകളി വിദ്ധ്യാര്ത്തി ചുരുങ്ങിയത് രണ്ടു വര്ഷം എങ്കിലും നിരന്തരമായി അഭ്യസ്സിച്ചാല് മാത്രമേ കഥകളി അരങ്ങേറ്റം നടത്താന് പറ്റുകയുള്ളു. മറ്റു കലകള് അങ്ങനെ അല്ല. മുന്പ് ഒക്കെ കാലത്ത് മൂന്നു മണിക്ക് എണീറ്റ് കണ്ണ് സാധകവും ഉഴിച്ചിലും ഒക്കെ നിര്ബന്ധം ആയിരുന്നു. ഇന്ന് പലരും അതൊന്നും ചെയ്യുന്നില്ല. അതെ പോലെ പണ്ട് കളി ഒരു രാത്രി മുഴുവനും ഉള്ള അവതരണ രീതി ആയിരുന്നു. ഇന്ന് പോയി പോയി അത് മൂന്നും നാലും മണിക്കൂറിനുള്ളില് ഒതുങ്ങി ഒരു സംഷിപ്ത രൂപം മാത്രമായി ചുരുങ്ങി ഇരിക്കുന്നു. അത് കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ പദവും മേളവും ആട്ടവും വിസ്താരങ്ങള് എല്ലാം തന്നെ വളരെ അധികം ഇല്ലാതായി കഴിഞ്ഞു. കുട്ടികളും മാതാപിതാക്കളും ഏറ്റവും എളുപ്പം പഠിച്ചു എടുത്തു അവതരിപ്പിക്കാവുന്ന വിദ്യകള് പഠിക്കാന് താല്പ്പര്യം കാണിക്കുന്നു.Dr. R: ഇന്നത്തെ ഗുരുക്കന്മാരില് ചുരുക്കം ചിലര് മാത്രമേ പഴയ സമ്പ്രദായങ്ങള് തുടര്ന്ന് വരുന്നുള്ളൂ. അവരില് ഒരാള് ആണ് ഗോപി ആശാന്. കണ്ണ് സാധകവും, ഉഴിചില്ലും എല്ലാം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് നിര്ബന്ധം. കൂടാതെ, സമയം നോക്കാതെ ഉള്ള പഠിപ്പിക്കലും. വെറുതെ അല്ല അദ്ധേഹത്തിന്റെ ശിഷ്യര് എല്ലാവരും കളിയില് പുരോഗതി പ്രാപിക്കുന്നത്. ഇതിനോടകം അദ്ധേഹത്തിന്റെ 10 ശിഷ്യര്ക്ക് കേന്ദ്ര സ്കോളര്ഷിപ് കിട്ടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. അത് കിട്ടാന് ഉള്ള എല്ലാ മാര്ഗ നിര്ദേശങ്ങളും തയ്യാറെടുപ്പുകളും എല്ലാം ആശാന് മുന്നിട് വന്നു ഒപ്പം നിന്ന് ചെയ്തു കൊടുത്തത് കൊണ്ട് അവരെല്ലാം ഇന്ന് ആ സൌഭാഗ്യങ്ങള് അനുഭവിക്കുന്നു.
RM: കഥകളിയില് എന്തെകിലും നൂതനമായ ആവിഷ്കാരങ്ങള് താങ്കളുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തില് ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ടോ?
KG: ഉണ്ണായി വാര്യര് സ്മാരക കലാനിലയത്തിന്റെ നൂതന രീതികളുടെ ഭാഗമായി വന്ദേമാതരം, അഷ്ടപദി എന്നിവ കഥകളി രൂപത്തില് ആക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. കൂടാതെ, മറ്റു ഭാഷ സാഹിത്യങ്ങളില് നിന്ന് മാക്ബത്ത്, ഹാംലെറ്റ്, മെര്ച്ചന്റ് ഓഫ് വെനിസ്സു, എന്നിവയും കഥകളി രൂപത്തിലാക്കി ഇന്ത്യയിലും വിദേശത്തും ഇപ്പോള് അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അവയ്ക്ക് എല്ലാം നല്ല സ്വീകരണം ആണ് ലഭിക്കുന്നത്.
RM: താങ്കളുടെ കുടുംബം?
KG: ഭാര്യ ജയശ്രീ, നല്ല ഒരു ഭരതനാട്ട്യം, ഓട്ടംതുള്ളല്, കഥകളി നര്ത്തകി ആണ്. ഇപ്പോള് ബാങ്കില് ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഏക മകള് ഐശ്വര്യാ ഗോപി. ഇപ്പോള് സിവില് എഞ്ചിനീയറിംഗ് പഠനത്തിനു ചേര്ന്നു. കഥകളിയില് എന്റെ തന്നെ ശിഷ്യ ആണ്. വളര്ന്നു വരുന്ന ഒരു കലാകരി എന്ന് പറയാം.
RM: താങ്കളുടെ ആരാധകരോട് എന്തെങ്കിലും പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് പറയാന് ഉണ്ടോ?
KG: കഥകളി എന്ന കല എന്നും നില നില്ക്കണം എങ്കില് അതില് ജനങ്ങള്ക്ക് താല്പര്യവും അതിനോട് പഠിക്കാന് വരുന്നവര്ക്ക് അര്പ്പണ മനോഭാവവും വേണം. അവരുടെ സന്ഘ്യാ ബലം ഇപ്പോള് കുറഞ്ഞു വരുന്നു. ആ പ്രവണത മാറിയെ തീരു. തിരനോട്ടം ദുബായ്, കല അബുദാബി എന്നീ സങ്കടനകള് ഈ മേഖലയില് സ്ലാഘനീയമായ പ്രവര്ത്തികള് ആണ് ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഗള്ഫ് രാജ്യങ്ങളിലും പുറത്തും ഇങ്ങനെ ഉള്ള പ്രത്യേകിച്ചും തിരനോട്ടം ദുബായിയുടെ ആഭിമുഘ്യത്തില് നടത്തുന്ന കഥകളി ആസ്വാധന അവതരണ പരിപാടികള്. . ഇനിയും കഥകളി കലാകാരന്മാര്ക്ക് കൂടുതല് അവസ്സരം നല്കുകയും കഥകളി, കേളി, തായമ്പക എന്നിങ്ങനെയുള്ള കേരളത്തിന്റെ തനതു കലാ രൂപങ്ങള് പ്രദര്ശിപ്പിക്കാന് ഉള്ള അവസ്സരങ്ങള് കൂടുതല് ആയി ലഭ്യമാക്കുകയും ചെയ്യണം എന്ന അഭ്യര്ത്ഥന ഉണ്ട്.
