Rangoli art work of Pramukh Swami Maharaj
Pramukh Swami Maharaj was Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s fifth spiritual successor of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha. He led by example; his humility, faith in Bhagwan Swaminarayan, and compassion inspired millions of devotees and over 1000 sadhus to maintain moral and spiritual lifestyles. Pramukh Swami Maharaj steered the reins of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha for many decades, effectively administering its spiritual, cultural, personal development and humanitarian activities.

During a recent festive occasion held at the BAPS Hindu Mandir site, a rangoli art work was created by Narayanan Nampoothiri from Kerala. It was timely offering from the community members to be part of the Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s Centenary Celebrations.
Narayanan Nampoothiri (Ramesh Nampoothiri) Attoor, Shornur, Trichur District, Kerala, a traditional Keralite nampoothiri (priest), who is an exponent in creating traditional Kolam (Rangolis) using oraganic colors. He uses rice powder, turmeric power, rice husk powder, leaf powder and a mix of turmeric and lime to create the natural color variations. Each of the colors signifies the Panchaboothas, ie, the five great elements, also five physical elements, which, according to Hinduism, is the basis of all cosmic creation. · Rice powder – white – depicting Akasha – Sky – signifies simplicity, purity, cleanliness and humility · Turmeric powder – yellow – depicting prithvi – earth – signifies, Optimism · Burnt rice husk powder – black – depicting vayu – air – signifies Power and Control · Leaf powder – green – depicting jala – water – signifies growth and health · Turmeric+lime mixed – red color – depicting Agnic – Fire – signifies Passion. Mr. Nampoothiri, started practicing the art of drawing these kolams at a late age, but since then, he has never looked back. He now creates exceptional art work of deities, gurus and leaders with divine precision and presence that glorifies each time he finishes. Normally, it takes 3-4 hours to complete an art work, which requires lot of sradha (focus and concentration), patience and skill.
In the above art work of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, Ramesh ji used turmeric powder (for yellow), rice powder (for white), burnt rice hust powder (for black) and most importantly a mix of turmeric and lime mixed (to create red). The beauty and the divine essence of this prepartation was that, the red color mix was prepared a week before the event and then on the day of the presentation, it dried and mixed well and formed an orange brown color that gave the exact look and feel of human skin.
