Music therapy loses its champion – Kunnakkudi Vaidyanathan
Sharadha Narayanan | ENS09 Sep 2008 12:00:00 AM ISTCHENNAI: Violin maestro Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan (73) passed away in the city on Monday evening following a prolonged illness. The Padma Shri Awardee was admitted to the Sri Ramachandra University Medical College Hospital where he breathed his last following a cardiac arrest.
Kunnakudi was undergoing treatment for a stomach ailment for over two months. Initially, he was taken to a private hospital in Perungudi and later moved to Ramachandra Hospital where he was under intensive medical care.
Sources close to the musician said that Kunnakudi, as the ace musician was popularly referred to, had not been keeping good health for over a couple of months. His son, a doctor working in Melbourne, had also come down to Chennai to treat him and he was planning to take his father abroad for treatment.
However, Kunnakudi’s health deteriorated over the weekend and he was under intensive care at the hospital when he developed complications in his heart.
His body is expected to be cremated tomorrow. He is survived by wife and two sons.
Born in 1935 to Ramaswamy Sastri and Meenakshi at Kunnakudi in Sivaganga district, his father was an erudite scholar in Sanskrit, Tamil and Carnatic music as well as a great composer and exponent of Carnatic music and Kathakalakshepam.
For young Kunnakudi, veda sastram and sangeetam were the main disciplines besides schooling.
The noted violinist, spotted always with a bright saffron spot and sacred ash smeared on his forehead, was known for introducing novelties in his concerts. He has performed all over the world. Conferred the Padma Shri in 2005 , he was also the head of the Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram for many years.
Kunnakudi joined Modern Theatres for film orchestras in the late 50s. In 1963, he got a break with HMV as a music director.
He produced Muruga Ganamrutham.
From 1976, Kunnakudi concentrated on his solo concerts and stopped accompanying vocals for concerts.
Apart from Carnatic music, he also tried his hand in movies. He produced Todi, a musical feature film, along with T N Seshagopalan which went on to become a success. Kunnakudi made a special appearance in the 2005 Tamil blockbuster movie Anniyan directed by Shankar.
Honours have pursued him. Apart from the Padma Shri, he was given the title ‘Sangita Mamani’ and was conferred with more than 200 awards He was also the secretary of Thygabramha Sabha, Tiruvaiyaru in Thanjavur, which organises the annual Aradhna Festival of the great carnatic music composer Saint Thyagaraja. Kunnakudi also had deep faith in the therapeutical merits of music.

ഇന്നു വിശുദ്ധ റമദാന് മാസ്സത്തിലെ ഒന്പതാം ദിവസം. എല്ലാ വിശ്വാസികള്ക്കും എന്റെ പ്രണാമങ്ങള്. ഇവിടെ ഞാന് കുറച്ചു ദിവസ്സങ്ങളായി എഴുതി വരുന്നതിനെ പറ്റി പല തരത്തിലുള്ള അഭിപ്രായങ്ങളും എനിക്ക് കിട്ടാറുണ്ട്. പരമാവധി മത രാഷ്ട്രീയ ചിന്തകള് ഒന്നും തന്നെ പ്രതിപാധിക്കാതെ ഇരിക്കുന്നതും അത് തന്നെ കാരണം. ഇതു ഒരു സൌഹൃദത്തിന്റെ വേധിയാണല്ലോ. അത് വളര്ന്നു വലുതാവുകയാണ് നമ്മുടെ ആവശ്യം. സമുധായത്തിനു സഹായമേകാന് സന്നദ്ധത ഉള്ള ഒരു പറ്റം മനുഷ്യരുടെ കൂട്ടായ്മ. അതാണ് ലക്ഷ്യം. അവിടെ വേണ്ടത് അടുക്കും ചിട്ടയും ആണ്. അത് വളരാനും, വളര്ത്തി കൊണ്ടു വരാനും ഉതകുന്ന ചില ചെറിയ കാര്യങ്ങള് സ്പര്ശിക്കുക മാത്രമെ ഇവിടെ ഞാന് ചെയുന്നുള്ളൂ. അത് നിത്യേന ഞാനും നിങ്ങളും കാണുകയും കേള്ക്കയും ചെയ്യുന്ന സാദാരണ കാര്യങ്ങളില്ലൂടെ നിങ്ങള്ക്കായി എഴുതുന്നു.
അപ്പോള് വരുന്ന ഒരു പ്രസക്തമായ ചോദ്യം – സാധാരണ എന്നോട് പലരും ചോദിക്കാറുള്ള ചോദ്യം? ഏത് സമയവും കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറിന് മുന്നിലാണ് അല്ലെ ജോലി ? അല്ലേ അല്ല. പക്ഷെ ഏത് സമയവും എന്റെ കയ്യില് ഒരു തുണ്ട് കടലാസ്സും ഒരു പേനയോ പെന്സിലോ കാണും. അതാതു സമയത്തു മനസ്സിലൂടെ കടന്നു പോകുന്ന ഓരോ ചെറിയ നുറുങ്ങു ചിന്തകളും ഒന്നോ രണ്ടോ ചെറിയ വാചകങ്ങളായി അതില് കുറിച്ചിടും. അത് ചിലപ്പോള്, ഓഫീസില് ഇരിക്കുന്ന സമയത്താവം, അല്ലെങ്കിലും, ഡ്രൈവ് ചെയുന്ന സമയത്താവം, വായിക്കുന്ന സമയത്താവം അല്ലെങ്കില് വൈകീട്ട് നിത്യേന ഉള്ള നടത്താമോ ഒട്ടത്തിന്റെയോ ഒക്കെ സമയത്താവം. ആ ചെറിയ നുറുങ്ങുകളാണ് – spark – വലിയ കാര്യങ്ങളിലേക്കുള്ള മാര്ഗ ദര്ശികള്. നമ്മുക്ക് ഇവിടെ സ്പാര്ക്ക് എന്ന പേരിലുള്ള ഒരു സുഹൃത്ത് ചെയ്തു വരുന്നതും ഇതു പോലെ വിജ്ഞാന പ്രദമായ കാര്യങ്ങള് തന്നെ.
അടുക്കിനെയും ചിട്ടയെയും പറ്റി പറഞ്ഞു വരുമ്പോള് ഓര്മ്മ വരുന്നതു ഒരു പ്രധാന കാര്യം. ഇവിടെ നമ്മുടെ പല സുഹൃത്തുക്കളും ജോലിക്കായി അപേക്ഷകള് അയക്കാറുണ്ട്. പലരില് നിന്നും അപേക്ഷകള് കിട്ടരും ഉണ്ട്. പല സമയത്തും ഒരു ആമുഖമോ, വിവരണമോ ഒന്നും ഇല്ലാത്ത ഒരു ഇമെയില് ആണ് കണ്ടു വരുന്നതു. എന്ത് കൊണ്ടു ഒരു അഞ്ചു മിനിട്ട് സമയം കൂടുതല് എടുത്തു, തന്നെ പറ്റിയും, താന് നേടാന് ഉദ്ദേശിക്കുന്ന പുതിയ ജോലിയെ പറ്റിയും തന്റെ അതിനുതകുന്ന അനുയോജ്യതയെ പറ്റിയും തന്നാലാവുന്ന ഒരു ചെറിയ രീതിയില് എഴുതി സമര്പ്പിച്ചു കൂടാ? ഇതു ആ അപേക്ഷ കിട്ടുന്ന അത് വായിക്കുന്ന ആള്ക്ക് ആ അപേക്ഷ നല്കിയ ആളെ പറ്റി ഒരു ഏകദേശ രൂപം കിട്ടാനുള്ള അവസ്സരം അനായാസം നല്കുന്നു.
ഇനി വേറെ ഒരു ചില കൂട്ടരെയും കാണുവാനിടയായി. ജോലികള്ക്കായി അപേക്ഷിക്കുക. അവരെ പരീക്ഷകള്ക്കായി വിളിക്കുമ്പോള് വരാതിരിക്കുകയോ ഒഴിവു കഴിവ് പറയുകയോ ചെയ്യുക. തനിക്ക് പറ്റില്ല എന്ന് ഉള്ളപ്പോള് എന്തിന് അപേക്ഷിച്ച് മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ സമയം വെറുതെ നഷ്ടപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു?
ഇന്നലെ പ്രശസ്തരായ രണ്ടു സംഗീതജ്ഞര് നിര്യാതരായി. കുന്നക്കുടി വൈദ്യനാഥ ഭാഗവതരും, ചക്കംകുളം അപ്പു മാരാരും. വയലിന് വായനയിലൂടെ ഭാഗവതരും ചെണ്ട മേളത്തിലൂടെ മാരാരും നമ്മളെ മാസ്മര ലോകത്തിലേക്ക് നയിച്ചവരായിരുന്നു. ഭാഗവതര് ഒരിക്കല് മദിരാശിയില് വയലിന് വായിച്ചു മഴ പെയിച്ചുവത്രെ. അത്രയ്ക്ക് വിദ്വാന് ആണ് അദ്ദേഹം. എന്നാല് തന്നെ ആദരിക്കാന് വന്നവരോടെ അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞതു – ഇതു തന്റെ മാത്രം കഴിവല്ല, താന് വയലിന് വായനയിലൂടെ ഈശ്വരനോട് പ്രാര്തിച്ചപ്പോള് തന്നോടൊപ്പം ചേര്ന്നു പ്രാര്ത്ഥന നടത്തിയ അനേകായിരം ഭക്തരുടെ പ്രാര്ഥനയുടെ സമ്മിശ്ര ഫലമാണ് അതെന്നായിരുന്നു അദ്ധേഹത്തിന്റെ ഭാഷ്യം.
ഏതൊരു കൂട്ടായ്മയും ഒത്തൊരുമയോടെ പ്രവര്ത്തിച്ചാല് നല്ല ലക്ഷ്യം താനേ വന്നു ചേരും എന്ന് വേറെ ഒരു രീതിയില് അദ്ദേഹം നമ്മളെ മനസ്സിലാക്കി തരുന്നു.

ഇന്നു വിശുദ്ധ റമദാന് മാസ്സത്തിലെ ഏഴാം ദിവസ്സം. ഓരോ ദിവസ്സം കഴിയും തോറും, ഭക്തിയും ശക്തിയും കൂടുതല് ആര്ജിച്ചു വരുന്നതായി എല്ലാവരിലും ഒരു തോന്നല് ഉളവായി കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. ആദ്യ ദിവസങ്ങളിലെ ക്ഷീണമോ വിഷമതകള് ഒന്നും തന്നെ ഇപ്പോള് ഇല്ല.
ഇന്നലത്തെ ചിന്തകള് വസ്ത്ര ധാരണ രീതികളെ പറ്റിയായിരുന്നു. സമൂഹത്തില് മനുഷ്യരുടെ പെരുമാറ്റ ചട്ടങ്ങളും അവിടെ ചെറുതായി കടന്നു വന്നു.
ഇന്നലെ കാറില് യാത്ര ചെയ്യുന്ന സമയത്തു ഉണ്ടായ രണ്ടു അനുഭവങ്ങള് ഇവിടെ വിവരിക്കാം. കാലത്തു , പ്രത്യേകിച്ചും ഈ റമദാന് മാസ്സക്കാലത്ത് ടാക്സി കിട്ടാന് വളരെ വിഷമമാണ് അബുധാബിയില്. മറ്റു സ്ഥലങ്ങളായ ദുബായിലും സ്ഥിതി വ്യതസ്തമല്ല. കാലത്തു ഒരാവശ്യത്തിന് പുറത്തു പോയപ്പോള് വഴിയില് കണ്ട ഒരു കാഴ്ച ഇവിടെ വിവരിക്കാം. എല്ലാ സ്ടോപ്പുകളിലും ധാരാളം യാത്രക്കാര് ടാക്സി കാത്തു നില്ക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഒരിടത്ത് ഒരു സ്ത്രീ സ്റ്റോപ്പ് ഇല്ലാത്ത ഒരു സ്ഥലത്തു നില്ക്കുന്നത് കാണാന് ഇടയായി. മുന്നില് പോയിരുന്ന ടാക്സി കൈ കാണിച്ചു നിര്ത്താതെ വന്നപ്പോള് അവര് ആ ഡ്രൈവര് കേള്ക്കുന്ന വിധത്തില് ഉറക്കെ ശപിക്കുന്നതും കണ്ടു. പാവം അയാള് എന്ത് ചെയ്യും? സ്ടോപ്പുകളില് മാത്രമേ ഇവിടെ നിര്ത്താന് പറ്റുകയുള്ളൂ! അവരും എന്ത് ചെയ്യും? നട്ടുച്ച നേരത്ത് വെയിലത്ത് കുറെ നേരമായിട്ടുണ്ടാവം പാവം ടാക്സി കാത്തു നില്ക്കുന്നത്. സ്ടോപ്പുകളില് ആരും ക്യു പാലിക്കുന്നില്ല. ഇതു ഒരു വലിയ പ്രശ്നം തന്നെ.
വേറെ ഒരു ചിന്ത കടന്നു വന്നത് വസ്ത്ര ധാരണ രീതിയെയും പെരുമാറ്റ ചട്ടങ്ങളെയും പറ്റിയാണ്. ഇന്നലത്തെ ചിന്തകളില് അത് സൂചിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു. യാത്ര ചെയ്യുമ്പോള് മലയാളം റേഡിയോ വച്ചപ്പോള് ഒരു പ്രശസ്ത മത ചിന്തകന്റെ പ്രഭാഷണം കേള്ക്കാന് ഇടയായി. സംയമനം ആയിരുന്നു വിഷയം. വളരെ നല്ല രീതിയില് അദ്ദേഹം മനുഷ്യനും മൃഗങ്ങളും തമിലുള്ള വ്യത്യാസ്സങ്ങള് മനസ്സിലാക്കി തരുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഇന്നലെ തന്നെ, ഇവിടത്തെ ഒരു പത്രത്തില് വന്ന കത്തുകളില് ഒരെണ്ണവും എന്റെ ശ്രദ്ധ പിടിച്ചു പറ്റി. റമദാന് കാലത്തു മറ്റു മത വിശ്വാസികള്ക്കുള്ള വിലക്ക് പാടില്ല എല്ലാം സാധാരണ പോലെ തന്നെ നടക്കണം എന്നാല് മാത്രമേ, സംയമനം – ഭക്ഷണതിനോടും മറ്റു ലൌകീകമായ ആസക്തികളോടും പൊരുതി യഥാര്ത്ഥ രീതിയില് ഉപവാസം അനുഷ്ടിക്കാന് ഇട നല്കുകയുള്ളൂ എന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം എഴുതികണ്ടു. ഒരു വേറിട്ട ചിന്ത.
കാര് ഓടിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നപ്പോള് യേശുദാസിന്റെ ഒരു നല്ല ഗാനവും അപ്പോള് കേള്ക്കാനിടയായി…

TALENT SHARE 2008 – An online global talent hunt for children between 4 to 15
Dear Friends and Dear Parents,
Summer holidays over and the holy month of Ramadan started in the Middle East. Back home, it is festival time with Onam just near-by and several other regional festivities lined up after. Children are our future and any attempt to bolster their talents will never be wasted. I find many opportunities available for children who pursue cultural talents like Dance, Music, etc and also for those who are interested in sports capabilities. All of them have plenty of venues to exhibit and excel in their interesting field.
Talent doesn’t end there. There are some un-sung little heroes left un-attended. Those who find letters, words and sentences more attractive than every one else. Or those who find lines, strokes and colours more attractive than words and letters. They live in a different world and it is our responsibility to nurture their talents too.
With this view in mind, we present to you on behalf of Team 1 Dubai and Athaani blogspots, the first ever on-line talent hunt – SHARE 2008.
It is simple and easy to participate. All rules and regulations are clearly drafted with absolute transparency in selection procedures. Moreover, all participants will get an attractive participation certificate and winners will get suitable rewards, wherever they are located globally.
So, why waste time? See what your child has in store in his little mind. From our side, we will regularly update both the websites with guidance notes and assistance material to develop these talents. All the entries received will be posted online for the whole world to notice your child’s creative talent.
Winners will be decided by a collective panel of eminent judges, both in-house and online.
Remember, creativity is immortal. An article or a creative posts of your child submitted online is life long. I believe it is my share of responsibility to promote talent. It will be your share too, if you acknowledge it and support us to obtain at least one entry for this global competition.
