Sharjah: The Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services on Tuesday launched the fourth edition of the Used Book Fair at Khalid Lagoon.
The Used Book Fair, held under the theme, ‘The Treasure of Knowledge’, runs until Friday, and aims to promote the value of books, as well as highlight the importance of developing a culture of reading in the community.
Jihad Al Taher, head of the organising committee at the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS), told Gulf News that nearly Dh200,000 was raised from last year’s edition of the event, and that all the funds raised during the fair are sent to the various departments that operate under the SCHS.
“The funds go towards various services, which include purchasing wheelchairs or aiding a department that may lack funds. Some parents are unable to pay the fees for their children at some of our schools, so we distribute the money and pay for the remainder of the fees,” said Al Taher.
He pointed out that around 55 private and public schools, and three universities participated in this year’s fair, in addition to 50 institutes, including the Japanese and Chinese embassies, Sharjah Police and the Juma Al Majid Centre. The used books are offered at between Dh1 and Dh20, and all the books are provided by school students.
“Beginning in October, we distributed circulars in schools requesting students to donate their old books for the fair. We are open to all books in any language as long as they are not academic ones,” Al Taher said.
“If visitors pass by and want to donate books, they are welcome to do so. Each stand has about 1,000 books, and the SCHS has one stand for miscellaneous donors, so visitors can drop their books there.”
He added that if there are still many books left on display by Friday, their prices would be slashed, and the books remaining unsold even after that will be kept and used for next year’s event.

World Recession Day – 17 February
World Recession Day – 17 February
Why not? Just suddenly this thought came to me. Many are affected by recession and joining the un-employment group. Even then, crazy about these artificially created days, we tend to explore the width and breadth of our purse and credit/debit cards – just for the sake of it. An article written by Sri Joy Mathews in his blog, prompted me to create this special day ” World Recession Day – 17 th February”. Let us participate and share our knowledge to not face another year of Recession.
വരവായി വാനരക്കാലം blog post dated 13 February 2009.
Thinking about it, do we need these special occasions to remember our mother, father, children and loving wife? It is a daily affair and it should be the case.
So, wish your friend, relative, brother and sister a Happy World Recession Day – 17 February.
We need a special day for everything. Thus, we need a day to remember and warn the realities of things happening around and a siren of the alarming economically tougher days that we walked past and the days coming ahead till the global situation is accustomed and worked over by all. A day to remember our dear friends who lost out in the great battle of recession during the last several month. A day to support and cheer those who are still fighting to survive it and look ahead.
So, let us all mark 17th February as WORLD RECESSION DAY.
The day is chosen as the third thursday in February. Thursday being a universal working day, will be suitable for all to share and spread the importance of due diligence in finance management.
A day to remember:
* the importance of diligent saving
* the importance of efficient spending
* the importance of long term and short term planning
* the importance to educate our children the value of money
* the importance to not get carried away by PLASTIC MONEY
* many more financial principles that we learn on a daily basis.
Here it is, one more day in our life to remember. If you feel this day has to be remembered, include it in your diary, and spread the word around.
