വന്ധ്യതാ ചികിത്സയില് നൂതന മാര്ഗവുമായി മലയാളി ഡോക്ടര്
ബാംഗ്ലൂര്: വിവാഹം കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ട് വര്ഷങ്ങള് കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും ഒരു കുഞ്ഞിക്കാലുകാണാന് കഴിയാത്ത ദമ്പതിമാര്ക്ക് പ്രതീക്ഷയുടെ പുതിയ ചികിത്സാരീതിയുമായി എത്തുകയാണ് ഡോ. എസ്.കെ. ശ്രീകുമാര്. പോള്സ്കോപ്പ് ഉപയോഗിച്ചുള്ള കൃത്രിമബീജസങ്കലനവിദ്യയാണ് എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ ആലുവ സ്വദേശിയായ ഈ വന്ധ്യതാ നിവാരണവിദഗ്ധന്റെ പുതിയ ആയുധം. ഇതിലൂടെ ഗര്ഭം ധരിച്ച്, ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യയില് ആദ്യത്തെ കുഞ്ഞ് 2009 മെയ് 6ന് ബാംഗ്ലൂരിലെ ചെറിഷ് സെന്റര് ഫോര് റീപ്രൊഡക്ടീവ് മെഡിസിന് ആന്ഡ് ഫെര്ട്ടിലിറ്റിയില് പിറന്നു. തിരുവനന്തപുരം സ്വദേശിനിയായ സുനിതയ്ക്ക് സിസേറിയനിലൂടെ പിറന്ന ആരോഗ്യവതിയായ കുട്ടിക്ക് ഇപ്പോള് പ്രായം ഒരു മാസവും ആറുദിവസവും.
മൈസൂര് സര്വകലാശാലയില്നിന്ന് എം.ബി.ബി.എസും എം.ഡി.യും കഴിഞ്ഞ ഈ വിദഗ്ധന് വന്ധ്യതാ ചികിത്സയില് ഡോക്ടറേറ്റ് നേടിയത് ജര്മനിയില്നിന്നാണ് കുറച്ചുകാലം ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടില് ജോലിചെയ്തശേഷം ഇന്ത്യയിലെത്തിയ ഇദ്ദേഹം പന്ത്രണ്ടുവര്ഷംകൊണ്ട് മൂവായിരത്തോളം പേര്ക്ക് സന്താനസൗഭാഗ്യം നേടിക്കൊടുത്തു. കേരളത്തില് ആദ്യമായി ടെസ്റ്റ്ട്യൂബിലൂടെ ഇരട്ടക്കുട്ടികള് പിറന്നതും ഈ യുവാവിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലായിരുന്നു.
2003 മുതല് അമേരിക്കയിലും യൂറോപ്പിലും പോള് സ്കോപ്പ് ഉപയോഗിച്ചുള്ള കൃത്രിമ ബീജസങ്കലനം പ്രയോഗത്തിലുണ്ട്. ഇന്ത്യയില് ഇത് വിജയകരമായി പരീക്ഷിക്കുന്നത് മുംബൈയിലെ ലീലാവതി ആസ്പത്രിയിലാണ്.
ഉയര്ന്ന ശേഷിയുള്ള ഇലക്ട്രോണിക് മൈക്രോസ്കോപ്പിനൊപ്പം വളരെ സൂക്ഷ്മമായ വസ്തുക്കളെപ്പോലും നിരീക്ഷിക്കാന് കഴിയുന്ന ക്യാമറകൂടി ഘടിപ്പിച്ച ഉപകരണമാണ് പോള്സ്കോപ്പ്.
സ്ത്രീയുടെ അണ്ഡം പുറത്തെടുത്ത് അതില് ബീജാണുവിനെ കുത്തിവെക്കുകയാണ് കൃത്രിമബീജസങ്കലനത്തില് അവലംബിക്കുന്ന രീതി. ബീജാണുവിനെ അണ്ഡത്തിലേക്ക് കുത്തിവെക്കുമ്പോള് അണ്ഡത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും നിര്ണായകമായ ‘സ്പിന്ഡില്’ എന്ന ഭാഗം താറുമാറായിപ്പോകാറുണ്ട്. ഇത്തരം അണ്ഡം ഗര്ഭപാത്രത്തില് തിരിച്ചുനിക്ഷേപിക്കുമ്പോള് വളരുകയുമില്ല.
പോള്സ്കോപ്പിലൂടെ നിരീക്ഷിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ബീജത്തെ അണ്ഡത്തിലേക്ക് കുത്തിവെക്കുമ്പോള് സ്പിന്ഡിലിന് തകരാറുപറ്റാനുള്ള സാധ്യത 99 ശതമാനം കുറയുമെന്ന് ഡോ. ശ്രീകുമാര് പറയുന്നു. മാത്രമല്ല, ഗര്ഭധാരണ സാധ്യത അണ്ഡത്തിന്റെ ഗുണനിലവാരത്തെയും സ്പിന്ഡിലിന്റെ കരുത്തിനെയും ആശ്രയിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതിനാല് ആരോഗ്യമുള്ള അണ്ഡം തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കാനും പോള്സ്കോപ്പിലൂടെ കഴിയും. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ ഈ രീതി പിന്തുടരുമ്പോള് ഗര്ഭധാരണസാധ്യത നൂറുശതമാനത്തിനടുത്താണെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടുന്നു. ചികിത്സാച്ചെലവ് കുറയുമെന്നും ഡോക്ടര് പറഞ്ഞു. ഒരു വര്ഷത്തോളം നീണ്ട പരീക്ഷണങ്ങള്ക്കും നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങള്ക്കുമൊടുവില് പുതിയ രീതിയിലൂടെ ഒരു കുഞ്ഞിനെ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചെടുക്കാന് കഴിഞ്ഞതിന്റെ ചാരിതാര്ഥ്യത്തിലാണ് വന്ധ്യതാചികിത്സ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ പുണ്യമാണെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്ന ഡോക്ടര് ശ്രീകുമാര്.

Deadliest dash in Abu Dhabi (June 9) is a very-well narrated article highlighting both the difficulties for pedestrians as well as drivers. In the case of Musaffah, authorities have to plan interim solutions like speed bumps (it is a long stretch there) or pedestrian-operated signals.
However, within Abu Dhabi city proper, it is the same old story – you fine me today, I will cross the same stretch tomorrow. I feel the only solution is to have high fencing on the road dividers which will make it impossible to jump across. Repeated public campaigns and guidance notifications have to be continued until it becomes a routine habit to use only pedestrian-designated crossings in accordance with the signals. It is nice to read that authorities are proceeding with several progressive measures, but the implementation may not be keeping pace with road usage growth.
